The Capital was quiet that afternoon.
Aizu looked down from the balcony at the city sprawling below. From the heights of Fleet headquarters, it was little more than white noise. It was nice to have a moment's calm before the storm began. A timer on his Scouter display was silently counting down. In minutes, the remaining directors of the World Trade Fleet would convene in the adjoining chamber. When they did, he intended to kill them all.
In his mind, he went through the list of people that would be in the room. He knew where they would sit, who would be strongest and where all the exits were. He had a mental script of the announcement he intended to make after the deed was done. The medical team were already on standby for retrieval should things go badly. The Warmaster knew he was taking a great risk, but as his father used to say:
"Nothing ventured, nothing gained," he muttered under his breath. He looked down at his mechanical right arm, which terminated in a hulking power claw. A direct result of his last encounter with members of the Saiyan Kingdom. The whole planet was holding its breath, waiting for the announcement that they were coming, but Aizu did not intend to wait any longer. He would not allow them to claim such a juicy prize.
He cast his eyes across the city once more, knowing that soon it would be irrevocably changed, one way or another. The timer on his Scouter beeped as it hit zero. He tore his eyes away from the metropolis below and turned to business, bringing up a heavy boot to the blast door sealing the balcony away from the Directors' chamber. With a brief squeal of protest, the metal buckled and gave way, collapsing inwards under the full might of his True Form. The Directors rose from their seats to face him. It was clear from the looks on their faces that they had suspected nothing. He smirked, raising his left palm. "You're fired." He quipped, before the room erupted into total chaos.
The city below carried quietly on through its early morning routines. People woke up and went about their day. It was nice outside. Sunny by Arcosian standards. Nobody heard the screams of the Directors. Nobody saw them break, and beg for mercy. Nobody but Aizu. They had no idea that high above, their fates were being determined. That was, until the message came.
"WE HAVE BEEN BETRAYED!" A strained voice rippled across the entire planet. An emergency announcement channel that hacked into every receiver that was part of the Fleet’s network had begun broadcasting. The voice played on earpieces and PA systems, on damn near anything that could play audio. And it continued. "ALL PERSONNEL, MAXIMUM ALERT! FLEET HEAD-" The shrill voice abruptly cut off. A heavy-sounding thump punctuated it.
Silence hung over the world for a moment. People stood frozen, all thoughts of their mundane tasks put aside. It was a perplexing communication, to be sure. But the meaning wasn't entirely clear at first. Then, a new voice came. It was deeper, and eerily calm.
"This is Aizu, former Warmaster of the World Trade Fleet." he said, kicking aside the last Director's corpse as he strode across the remnants of the chamber, back towards the balcony. His scouter was now broadcasting on the emergency band. "The Board of Directors are dead. The people of Arcose are free, for now." He allowed those last two words to linger for a moment, as though savoring their taste.
"But Arcose can no longer be your home. Fleet forces are in position to commence General Evacuation Order 1. I suggest you make your way calmly to the nearest transit station and await evacuation instructions." He looked down on the city once again, knowing that he was beyond the point of no return. It was oddly liberating.
"Many of you do not know me. Perhaps you are confused, or doubt the seriousness of this communication. So let me assure you: I will not stop with the Directors. Arcose is a cancer; eating away at the galaxy, corrupting everything it touches. For millennia it has been trapped in a cycle of destruction. Empires rise, and they fall. The wheel turns and entire species are crushed beneath it. But at the centre, it's always the same faces. The Lords of Arcose have woven their way into everything. They always worm their ways back into power here." With that, he turned away, moving into the chamber again.
In the city below, panicked chatter filled shops and offices and homes. The reality of what was happening was beginning to sink in, but the true magnitude of events had yet to be established. People began walking out into the street, looking up towards Fleet HQ and its great spire. What was happening up there?
"Too many lives have been thrown away. This war has gained us nothing. If I hadn't done this, the Saiyans would be here to take my role soon enough. They would not be so merciful as to give you a chance to escape." Those gazing into the sky began to murmur with dismay as a baleful red light began to pour from the top of the spire.
"Once the final evacuation craft leaves Arcose's orbit, the entire planet will be destroyed. The clock is ticking." With that, the communication ended. The city was flooded with sounds as normal programming resumed, and panic started to set in. The din was almost a whisper compared to what came next, however.
The Fleet Headquarters' spire erupted with a brilliant flash of crimson. A shockwave rippled across the city, rolling down from the great heights of the building. Windows shattered and walls shook. The entire top of the once-imposing structure was crumbling into rubble. And from the core of the destruction, a point of light drifted upwards.
Aizu, no longer the Warmaster, surveyed his handiwork as the evacuation schedule really began. Soon enough the Fleet would begin mobilising every ship at its disposal. It filled him with a strange sensation to see an edifice he had once admired, reduced to a ruin by his own hand.
Setting the thought aside, he took off, higher and higher into the sky, breaking the cloud layer. The air grew thin and the stars shone brighter than ever, even though the sun was in view. All sound was truly gone now. Even the distant roar of the city could not reach him in space. There, he would wait and watch the evacuation. If anyone wanted to stop him, they'd come looking for him soon enough.
True Form active.
