Got this idea from somethin' Bing mentioned a few days ago.
It's not unknown to split DEs, have people in them move far enough apart that it becomes two threads. The recent "Spectator" penalty gave me an idea related to that.
How would people feel about splitting post order in a DE?
To wit:
A starts a DE to blow up a city. B arrives to stop him. C shows up, but isn't fighting. Neither are D, E, or G. F, who's shown up, also decides to fight.
Now, A, B, and F's fight and actions are basically focused on each other. C,D,E, and G are sitting about talking, commenting, or what have you, and what they're doing has basically no relevance to any of the fighters. So, rather than having post order
A B C D E F G
going in a circle, with C D E and G possibly being skipped due to not a lot to post about, or slowing the whole DE significantly....
We have this instead!
Fight: A B F
Spectators: C D E G
People tag the next person in their post order, and it continues as such.
Two post orders, going at the same time. The peanut gallery is there, and can jump in if that's what they're doing, or be attacked just fine, in which case they join the Fight order. Anyone dropping out of the fight, assuming someone doesn't attack them, joins the Spectator order.
"But Tokoz!" I hear you cry! "This seems overcomplicated. Why not just keep up the current order as-is!"
Well, that's a good question. Three reasons.
1: DEs with spectators are a thing that's happened a lot, primarily with stuff like Challenges. Waiting for 5 people to post between every post of fighting makes the thread drag on for ages, and there's frequently times where the spectators are, frankly, contributing exactly nothing to the ongoing purpose of the thread, IE: a challenge or otherwise.
Sure, the Peanut Gallery Penalty disincentives this, but it still means people are THERE for whatever reason, and slowing things down.
2: It allows people in such scenarios as challenges or whatnot to be there, perhaps waiting their turn, without slowing the pace down or showing up after the 72 hour limit.
3: It hopefully should help prevent the need for Split DEs by allowing for simultaneous action, akin to cuts between ongoing fights. It also prevents the issue that fight posts frequently take up a few moments, while a conversation post or RP post will take a lot longer in most cases.
