"So, how does this thing work?" Nashua asked the salesperson as she placed the headband on the counter right by the cash register. The salesperson looked up at Nashua with possibly the most bored expression the Saiyan woman had ever seen on a living being's face. "Dude, I don't know, I just sell this stuff, read the instructions yourself," was the only reply Nashua received before they rang her up. A slightly hesitant "Okay," escaped Nashua's lips before she handed the cashier the (surprisingly large amount of) Zenni and he rang her up. After taking the change and thanking the man, Nashua took her headband and walked out of the store, a training gear shop called "Unbaolievable Gains!". She didn't really get what "bao" was, but she saw it all over the place on Earth, and their logo was plastered across her newly purchased gravity headband.
As far the instructions, there was a small little paper tag attached to the band with a zip tie, which Nashua read as she walked down the sidewalk. "Do you want to become the most powerful fighter in the galaxy?" it read in a big, bold font. "Then this is the headband for you! Simply turn the dial on the side accordingly while wearing the headband, and gravity itself will increase for you tenfold! The Gravity Band is capable of multiplying Earths default gravitational force by up to a hundred and fifty, though it is highly recommended that you begin with a ten times multiplier, and increase the force by ten for each additional session! After continued use, you won't baolieve your gains!" "...Huh," Nashua mumbled as she finished reading the little slip of paper. It sounded a little sketchy, but if it were true, then this would be a huge help in getting her stronger.
Maybe she could try it out just on the walk home, to see how it felt? Starting with walking exercises at higher gravity levels sounded smarter than going straight for a huge training routine. Nashua ripped the instructions tag off and slipped it into her pocket, because littering was for Arcosians, and then slipped the headband on over her thick, spiky, brown hair. It felt pretty snug, but it wasn't too uncomfortable. The dial was pretty small, on the left hand side of where she'd put it on. It had said to only start at gravity times ten before doing anything stronger, no matter what, right? The Saiyan very carefully twisted the dial just slightly into the next notch it clicked into. Nothing happened for a second or two, and Nashua was worried it would need batteries or something, but then, it felt like a giant truck had landed on her.
"Hnnng!" she loudly grunted, as her knees nearly buckled over, and she was forced to do an awkward sort of half squat half crouch position in the middle of the sidewalk. Her teeth clenched, Nashua looked around to see if anyone was watching. Sure enough, more than a few Earthlings who were walking by, either past her on the sidewalk or across the street, had their eyes trained on the Saiyan who was awkwardly crab walking down the sidewalk as she desperately tried to not get crushed by the weight of her own headband. "N-Nothing to... S-see here!" she exclaimed through grit teeth as sweat began to drip down her forehead. This was way more intense than Nashua had been expecting it to be! She thought it'd be more like the weighted clothes she was trying on in the store, but this was completely different.
"C'mon, I gotta stand up!" she thought, and, with a very scrunched up facial expression, she managed to force herself up and straighten out her legs. Her knees and thighs were on fire, but at least she didn't look like she had scoliosis anymore. "Okay," she thought, nervously looking down at the concrete slabs before her. "Just one foot in front of the other, I can do this." Her main worry was that as soon as she lifted one foot off the ground, the sole leg that was supporting her would just collapse or snap in half under all the weight. But they wouldn't sell something that dangerous that just anyone could walk in and buy, right? With a gulp, Nashua hesitantly attempted to raise one foot. It was very difficult to this. "Grrrgh!" she grunted again, using all of her force to lift the leg up and them slam it back down a few dozen centimeters forward.
To her surprise, her other leg didn't collapse as it was left to carry her entire body's weight. Okay, one step down. How many steps was it to get back to her pod again? All Nashua was really certain of was that it was a lot more than ten, which sounded like it would be her limit. But this was the very same training Saiyan warriors throughout history had gone through, and persevered all the same to come out the other side as powerful fighters who were respected across the galaxy for their strength and determination! If they could crank the gravity all the way up to a hundred and fifty and still fight and train with all their might, then Nashua could walk back to her space ship with ten times the standard gravity of Earth. "I CAN DO THIS!" she shouted, forgetting how many people were around her and focusing solely on her goal.
One foot lifted off the ground, then the other, and the next. After about thirty steps, Nashua reached the end of the block. "HA!" she laughed, placing her hands on her hips triumphantly. "HA HA! Take that, you stupid gravity!" Again, she forgot where she was, thanks to the sheer focus the gravity training required. A little Earthling boy walked by with his mother, and after watching the Saiyan's walk and sudden shouting, looked up to his caretaker and asked, "Mommy, why is that monkey lady being so strange?" The mother worriedly replied, "Don't look at her, Shimi, she's not right in the head," before grabbing the young boy's hand and quickly walking in the opposite direction of Nashua. The Saiyan shot them a glare as they walked away, but paid them no mind. She could totally handle this gravity thing now! For walking, at least.
Granted, that didn't mean the rest of the walk back to her ship was an easy one. It took quite a lot out of the Saiyan, and as she finally reached the place, she could barely even muster the strength to lift up the remote and click the front door down. Oh boy, now there were stairs to climb. Nashua hesitated in front of the four steps needed to get inside of her space ship. The thought occurred that she could just turn the gravity down to normal, only to climb the steps and get into her ship so she could finally do some real exercises with it, but she decided against it after realizing that, if she couldn't climb a trio of measly steps, there was no way she was going to be able to do any real training, even after she got inside the ship. And Nashua was not going to just waste 600 Zenni just to have a particularly difficult walk back from a store.
With all the effort she could muster, Nashua raised her left leg as high as she could and thrust it forward, only to find that the highest she could lift it was actually only half of the first step's height. "Come on," she grumbled in agitation as she tried again, this time using all her effort and then some. The leg raised higher and higher, millimeter by millimeter, and just when it seemed she was going to clear the step, her other knee buckled out. "Wagh!" she exclaimed as she collapsed forward, her knees catching themselves on the stairs and her arms jutting forward to grab onto the side of the ship. Okay, maybe stairs were a more advanced level of training than she needed right now. Nashua just wanted to get into the ship by any means necessary. She did have one idea, but it was going to be a little embarrassing.
The Saiyan managed to push herself up onto the stairs to the point where her feet were on the bottom step and her upper body was supported by the third. The inside was just barely out of reach! Nashua pulled out her pod's remote again, let out a sigh, and then clicked the button to close the door and bring the stairs swinging back up into the pod. Just as planned, Nashua was pushed up as well, flopping down flat onto the floor as the door swung shut and the stairs melded into the wall. "...I did it," she meekly cheered, lowly raising and shaking her fist in triumph. It took her a few minutes of just laying down on the metal floor feeling ridiculously heavy before she mustered the strength to stand herself up. Now that she'd been able to get her bearings, the gravity didn't really hurt all that much to be under, it just made her movements very weighted and sluggish.
Okay, now she could do some exercises. She'd actually researched the night before on the best routines to do while under heavier than normal gravity, and all sorts of stuff had come up. She decided to start by doing these things called squats, which were somehow different from normal squatting because you held out your arms in front of you while you squatted. Nashua didn't really get how that made them better, but she held her arms out in front of her anyway. Up and down she went, over and over, until she'd done twenty. "Huh, that wasn't so bad," she muttered. It was a little surprising to her how quickly ten times gravity had gone from "totally unbearable" to "manageable but difficult". Maybe she was already ready for twenty times normal gravity?
Out of curiosity, Nashua reached up to her headband and turned the dial very gently over to the next setting, upping the gravity on her body to twenty times that of Earth's usual. Again, nothing happened at first, but Nashua suddenly felt like her body was collapsing in on itself once the new setting kicked in. "G-Ga-gAgh!" she yelled out in pain, barely managing to turn the gravity off completely before collapsing down onto the floor and ripping the headband off her head in gasping breaths. "Okay," she said to herself, taking deep breaths of relief now that she was finally free from the higher gravitational pull of the headband. "Let's... Take this more slowly." It was actually pretty scary how quickly her body had started to collapse under the twenty setting, so the Saiyan dreaded to think what would happen if she were to up to gravity straight to a hundred and fifty.
She took some more deep breaths, and then stood herself up, her legs still a bit shaky after the experience. With some slight hesitance, she lowered the headband right back onto her head, it once again pushing her jagged brown locks snugly against her head. Her pale hand slowly lifted back up towards the gravity dial, and after a brief routine of her mentally pumping herself up by thinking of how strong she was going to get after doing this regularly, Nashua shifted the dial back over to ten again, this time using the brief period of nothingness to brace her body for the impact. Two seconds ticked by of pure anticipation, and then the gravity slammed back onto her like a switch had been flipped. "Haaah!" she grunted, her body still not really used to it, but it was better than it had been before. "Okay," she said after she'd adjusted as much as one could to suddenly feeling ten times heavier. "I think push-ups were next on the list?"
