| A Lesson in Earth Cultivation |
Navigating cities was a pain, so Synthesia planted a tree into the side of a mountain.
Perhaps the situation was in need of a bit more context. All the W’s-your who’s your what’s, etc. The purpose of this little journey of the child of nature was not especially complex, but it did matter a lot to him. After all, he wasn’t a child of nature for nothing. You didn’t get a title like that by not loving nature.
But you also didn’t get that kind of title by planting trees into cliffs. Thus, we return to our first question. Synthesia was here for the Pride Troopers Captain, one Terryn Yaki. He was interested simply because he knew him (unfortunately), and not from BaoTube, at that. Synthesia could even call him a friend! He only had like, two of those, if you didn’t count squirrels.
Synthesia wanted to meet with this new ‘protector of the world.’ It was a bold claim, a claim perhaps a little too bold for the arrogant child’s liking. He needed to figure out just what his little human friend was planning, what his intentions were. He needed to pay him a friendly little visit.
Well, that’s what he wanted, but he far from knew cities like he knew forests. They were annoying and filled with people. Yuck. That wasn’t what Synthesia wanted. The ‘s’ made a huge difference.
So, since navigating the city was out of the question, Synthesia went for the next best thing. He’d make Terryn come to him! And how did you do that? You just needed to make a scene. What better scene was there then a random tree growing instantaneously out of cold, hard rocks?
That’s exactly what happened, because as soon as the seeds hit the ground, they erupted. Their roots sprawled out across the ground, it’s bark rocketed upwards, it’s limbs sprawled itself out into the sky. Synthesia caught a branch with his right hand, and held onto it as the tree propelled him farther outwards. It kept growing and growing, and by now, people started to notice. The giant plant mass supported the weight of a lone boy who sat on it’s branches. Synthesia looked out at the city, a smug look on his face. He tapped the branch he was sitting on, growing a banana. He plucked it and began to eat leisurely, kicking his feet up on the branch. It was the largest and farthest jutting out branch in the entire mass. Hard to miss.
He chomped on his snack and waited.

''How the hell am I supposed to figure this mess out...!?''
Terryn groaned under his breath as he clutched his hair, a shaky pen in his other hand. The Captain sat at a wooden desk, files ontop of files scattered and stacked around him. Taxes, insurance bills, files of fellow Troopers, the list went on and on! Ever since Bella went MIA, the paperwork of the Troopers just got worse and worse, to the point where Terryn had no oversight whatsoever! ''Yeah, just go and die before getting this shit sorted, thanks Koban!'' Terryn laughed out, before simply dropping his forehead on the desk with a loud 'bang! ''Hhhhrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh...''
With an exhausted pout Terryn raised his head, dropping his pen and getting up from his desk with a sigh. ''Screw this, I'll just find a new secretary, or whatever.'' He groaned. As Terryn got up, though, he heard mumbling from outside that only seemed to get louder and louder, as if a crowd was starting to gather...
Curiously, Terryn stepped up to a nearby window, and gazed out of it. And just as he guessed, outside of the HQ stood a large crowd of people, all facing the same direction...Rambling something about a tree.
...A tree? 'Why do I have a terrible feeling about this?'
For better or worse, Terryn's curiosity was piqued. The Captain slid open the window and leaned out, gazing toward the mountainside close to North City. A gigantic tree sprouted out of it, completely out of nowhere! How the hell did that get there? He could've sworn it wasn't there yesterday...Right?
But as Terryn looked closer, he saw a small figure stand out on one of it's branches, moving on it's own... The Captain's eyes narrowed, and he looked closer. And closer... And closer...
''...Oh. Oh for fucks sake.''
The window slammed shut. Within moments Terryn emerged from the large building looking as agitated as ever. ''SYNTH! SERIOUSLY?! GET THAT TREE OUTTA HERE, YOU'RE SCARING EVERYONE!'' Terryn shouted from far away as he walked toward the kid, as if he was a parent scolding his kid. The civilians looked at the Captain with strange confusion, did he know him?
As Terryn got within a reasonable distance of Synthesia, he shook his head at him, looking both confused and disappointed. ''Come on dude, really? Why even?'' Terryn asked with a sigh, climbing up the bark to get to the same branch Synth was sitting on.
''Y'know, if you wanted to talk to me you could've just, I don't know, knocked on the door?''

"Oph! Terrphyn!" Synthesia called the skater's name with a wave, his mouth full of banana. He seemed oddly resistant to his scolding, simply giving him a wave at his question. A true genius didn't need to explain himself. He read that in a book. At least, he thought he did.
As soon as Terryn got up to the same branch as him, Synthesia scooted back a little bit and tapped the spot beside him. "C'mon, buddy. I live in forests. You think I know how to find buildings?" Synthesia laughed at him. "It's fine, it's fine. I'll take down this tree later maybe." He mumbled the last bit. "Anyways, that's not important. I came here to see you! Aren't you honored? You were on T.V! That's pretty cool." He nodded, swinging his legs back and forth over the tree.
He tossed the banana peel off the edge of the tree. It flew through the air and landed perfectly in a garbage can below. No littering for him. He reached up and grabbed two more, tossing one to Terryn. "Here, have one." He didn't really care wether or not Terryn ate it, as evidenced by the fact that he was already unpeeling his new banana. "So, Mr. Protector of the World"
Synthesia spread his arm out towards the cityscape below him. "Leader of the Pride-whatevers, so on, whatever. Titles, right? I don't really care much about them, to be honest." Synthesia took a bite of his banana. "You're pretty strong now, though. Maybe even as strong as I am when I'm trying. That's pretty good! You should be proud. But, even then, are you sure you can handle that whole 'protector of the world' thing?"
"I think humans are alright, but some are better than others, right? Lots of humans destroy forests and kill animals, but many of them do the opposite, and try and be kind to animals, preserve forests, so on and so forth." Synthesia flipped his head over to Terryn, a sly smile on his face. "Despite what you may think, I don't want humans to go away. But, I do want you to tell me how exactly you plan to protect the earth. I won't judge. Much."

''I, uhh...Good point.''
Terryn shrugged as he sat next to Synthesia. The odds of him knowing how the internet worked were slim to none, let alone an actual physical map. He couldn't help but let out a stifled chuckle. ''Oh, yeah, totes honored. How blessed I am by your presence!'' Terryn let out with a grin, spreading his arms to the heavens. ''Ppfhtrfh- nah, for real, good to see you, Synth.'' Terryn nodded. It sure as hell's been a while since he last saw the kid. Not surprising though, considering Synth was practically married to his forest.
''Oh, thaaanks.'' The Earthling let out, awkwardly grabbing the banana he was offered. He flinched at what Synth called him, groaning under his breath. ''Please don't...''
His face pulled into a discomforted scowl as he peeled his banana, gazing down at the city below him. ''It's the Pride Tr- y'knowwhatjustforgetit.'' Terryn quickly took a chomp of his banana, simply letting Synth continue his little talk. The compliment came out of nowhere, he'd admit. That was the last thing he'd expect from Synthesia. It didn't even sound backhanded and sarcastic?
But then came the question, most likely the very reason Synth came to him in the first place. Terryn simply shrugged, and waited until he was done talking. ...How did he plan to 'protect the world'? What did that even mean? No crime anywhere, never? No robberies, no murders, no pollution? No way in hell they could prevent everything.
''...We need to keep this place safe from people like the Fleet, and the one behind Central City's attack. That's...That's the main priority, I guess.'' Terryn let out, not sounding all too confident in his words. ''For now, the Troopers just, y'know, need more members. It's just Tysco and I now...-'' The Trooper glanced at Synthesia, and raised his brow. ''Not a lot we can keep tabs on with just two people.''
Terryn casually rested his chin on his hand as he took another bite of his banana. ''Shtuff wassh eashier when Koban and thfe resht were shtill arouhnd, y'know?''

"Oh phreally? Phat's how you think?" Synthesia spoke, taking a bite of his snack. He swallowed and continued. "I don't think you know what that means." Synthesia rested his head on his hand, looking out at the city. "What're you preventing, really? Your little group of friends can always only arrive after the damage is done, after everything already happens. If a city isn't blown up and villains aren't rampaging, what can you do? Nothing. You gotta wait till that stuff does happen before you can do anything. Doesn't really seem like prevention to me, don't you think?"
Synthesia shot Terryn a sidelong glance before continuing. "Preventing would be kicking out those Saiyans or whatever so that fleet doesn't come here. Preventing would be kicking out demonic energy sources before they can do any harm. Prevention would be wiping out those weird bug dudes 'cos all they do is conquer stuff. That's preventing." Synthesia waved his hand aside. "I have a feeling you don't want to do any of that. To be fair, neither do I... but you need to keep it in mind." Synthesia took another bite of his banana.
"I don't think that your little group of friends is a bad thing. Not at all, really. I'm happy there's people like me who love earth!" Synthesia pounded his chest with his free hand, taking the last bite of his banana and tossing into the trash can far below. "But I think you need to know the limits of your little group. More members, random citizens who you're calling to be 'heroes,' that's great and all, but it doesn't matter how vast your numbers are if someone destroys a city and then you engage them. Sure, you might make them do less damage, but they're still doing damage." Synthesia leaned back in his branch, staring up at the sky as he spoke.
"My pretty forests, plants, caves, trees, they're things that take millions and millions of years to form. Animals are just as much my family as your mom or dad are! You can't rebuild those like you can rebuild cities. That's why I know about keeping stuff safe, and preventing damage before it ever happens." Synthesia raised his hands into the air with a smile, feeling the cold air against his skin.
"You can't just say that you're going to fight them when they come around. You can't just say you're gonna stop bad guys. If you seriously think that's how easy it is, you're not going to be enough." Synthesia wagged his finger at Terryn. "If you're serious about this, if you seriously wanna make a difference, I'm all for it. I'll even join you, if that's what you need. But, don't think with your muscles. I'm sure us two could come up with something better if we used our brains, yeah?"

''Maybe we can, man. Maybe.'' Terryn replied as his sights sagged down. He hated to admit it, but Synthesia had a point, and a damn good one at that. The kid really was smarter than he initially thought. Terryn was just doing what he thought was right, but now that he was the Captain? It was time to think of an actual plan.
Terryn looked up, his face contorted into a contemplative slant. ''...Look, I'd love to simply kick the Saiyans off of this dirtball and have 'em fuck off back to Vegeta, but it ain't that simple.'' Terryn glanced sideways at Synthesia. Atleast, he assumed it wouldn't be simple. ''Those Saiyans are damn powerful, and so are the people that took Vegeta from 'em.'' Terryn looked at the city skyline for a moment, humming to himself. ''...Maybe we should help them retake Vegeta, but then what? We'll be directly involved in this stupid war. The Fleet will be gunning for us in no time.'' Terryn sighed out. ''...Not like we can really avoid that at this point, anyway...'' The Trooper mumbled in a defeated and agitated tone.
Shoving the last piece of banana in his mouth, Terryn chewed whilst in thought, letting the peel dangle from his grip. Perhaps helping the Saiyans retake Vegeta was the right call? But were they really ready for something that huge? They'd probably be biting off way more than they could chew... And regardless, Earth itself had it's fair share of problems.
Badman City.
''...Synth,'' Terryn paused. ''You've heard about what happened to Satan City, right? It was attacked by the Fleet, corrupted by a Demon that twisted it into this dark place FULL of evil shit. It's like something straight out of a cartoon.'' The Captain explained, waving one of his hands over North City to help set the scene for Synth.
After a brief silence, Terryn continued. ''I think that should be our first goal. We can't just let that corruption sit there and ignore it. We have to retake Satan City.'' Terryn nodded, finally seeming to be a bit confident in himself. They could figure out what to do next after taking back the City.
''I've fought the demon in control of the City before. She's...She's no joke, Synth. I was barely able to hold my own. She's got friends left and right, too. Mumbo, Maple, the Fleet...You name it.'' The Captain dug his nails into the branch he sat on, nervously gazing down. After a quick pause, Terryn looked up again.
''I- Uh, what I wanna say is...I can't do this shit alone...I need help.''

Synthesia listened intently to Terryn's words. Without another word, he jumped up from his branch and landed on his feet, crouching down and wrapping his arms around his knees. Of course he knew about Satan City. Who didn't? It was horrendous. Horrendous. And Synthesia had let it happen. He let them romp over the city whilst he was away, let them corrupt his lands. "...That's very brave of you, to have fought her on your own like that." Synthesia spoke softly, contemplating his own choices.
But contemplating would only get you so far. As much as Synthesia spouted hot air, as much as he thought himself superior, he realized that he wasn't a man of his word. What right did he have to criticize Terryn, who was trying his best out there to make a difference? He didn't have any right at all, that's what. For once, Synthesia shot Terryn a genuine smile, no backhanded sass, no underhanded snark.
"You know, I don't work with humans much. They aren't reliable, and they cause a lot of damage even when they're trying to help. You're a bunch of lazy good-for-nothings who create fancy gadgets because you can't do things yourself. You litter, you destroy ecosystems, you backstab eachother, terrible stuff." Synthesia stood from his spot, placing his hand on the trunk of the tree as he smiled out at the cityscape below him.
"But you guys keep trucking on, living, thriving, doing whatever you want. As much as you all are reprehensible, I think that a lot of you have a lot of good in you. I think that if you're still here, the world clearly wants you here. Staring at this giant threat coming towards us, I can see why! You guys are strong. Real strong. So, maybe for now, I wouldn't mind teaming up with you. I'll join your little group, become a hero, I guess you would say. Let's take back that city, alright?"
He leaned down and extended his hand towards the seated Terryn, still beaming at his one human friend.
"Don't let me down, okay?"

Terryn couldn't help but snicker to himself with underhanded contempt at Synthesia's words. He was right, and that's all there was to it. Humans really were terrible in nature, and to nature. They preach hope, justice and equality, and yet they destroy the things that gave them life in the first place. In the end, we're all just hypocrites.
But then, Synthesia turned it all around, and his words were still true. This was the first time that Terryn saw him being a sincere and genuine person. He was stunned, really. Yet despite his mouth hanging open in shock, the corners of his mouth tugged into a faint smile.
As the child of the forest extended his hand toward Terryn, the Earthling realized something.
Synthesia really was a good person. He had the best intentions for the entire planet. He truly cared about Earth.
He was a real Pride Trooper.
''...You bet your green ass I won't!'' Terryn's face cracked into a confident smile, suddenly gripping Synth's hand for a tight shake. His smile lingered for a while, fiery, passionate eyes staring into Synth's for just a brief moment. ''We're gonna take back what's ours, Synth. Teach 'em a lesson.'' Terryn nodded, letting go of Synthesia's hand and standing up from his spot.
He overlooked the city for a brief moment. Everything seemed so peaceful on the surface. Just a calm city with calm people going about their business. It was something he had taken for granted for his entire life, something he never realized the importance of... And now that burden was on their shoulders. They had to protect all of it, until their last breath.
''But...You know, Synth. Things are going to get really tough from now on.'' Terryn glanced at his friend, a hint of worry in his eyes. ''People will die. People we care about will die...'' Terryn paused, and swallowed. ''-Maybe we will die. You realize this, right?''
Ofcourse he realized. ''People die all the time.''. Terryn could almost hear a past version of himself spouting it without care, simply shrugging it off. But now that Banzo and Koban were gone, he truly realized what it meant. Death.
He just wanted to know for certain that Synth too, knew.

"Yeah. Maybe we will."
The short and to-the-point answer was uncharacteristic of Synthesia. He stared out at the city, casting his awfully scrutinizing gaze over it's civilians. It was almost as if he were staring into their very souls. He stood on his branch and looked out, his hair whipping around in the biting mountain winds.
"People," He waved his arm out over the city. "Usually don't need to think about death untill it's right in front of them. Someone they know or care about dies, and suddenly, they remember that it's something that happens all the time in this world." Synthesia turned his head down to look at the Captain, gauging his reaction.
"But!" Synthesia held his finger up with a sly smile. "I'm not a human." He stared down at his hands, taking in the skin that rest there. The false skin, an illusion to be more like the humans of whom Synthesia admired. But, alas, no matter how flawless your fabrication, it wouldn't give you the traits of the real thing. The 'thing' in question? Longevity.
"...You must know. Plants don't live all that long." He patted the tree in which they sat. "Of course, sometimes, there's exceptions. But pretty flowers, the leaves on trees... They're around for only a few months before they just... fade away. Die out. Have nature take it's course on them." He crossed his arms and turned towards Terryn fully, his standoffish and arrogant gaze subdued far more than it should've been.
"...So. I'm like them. How many years do I have left in me? Ten? Five? Just one? I don't know. I'll never know. Maybe one day, one day I'll wake up, and I'll look down and my body's decomposing, and, and there's nothing I can do to stop it. Maybe you'll find me, and all you'll get is a pile of rotting leaves, and you'll just need to accept that, hey, that's your friend over there..." Synthesia spoke with almost a sort of frantic fear, rushing out the sentence as if he needed to vanquish it from existence.
"...So. So yeah. I don't know how long I have, Terryn." Synthesia stared down at his feet, wiggling his toes like a child would. "...I wasn't given the privilege of living long and happy like a human. It's just... not possible for me. But even then, even if I won't live long enough to see them flourish, I have dreams too. Just like any human would."
Synthesia raised his arms to the sky, his face an unreadable mix of serenity and acceptance and childlike fear and wonder. "I want to see the world prosper. I want to see it beautiful, with things living in harmony. I want to see it. But... but maybe I won't. Maybe I won't." He dropped his arms and let out a halfhearted chuckle. "If I need to die to make that happen, if I need to die to make sure that my wishes are fulfilled in the end, then I'll gladly give my life to do it. After all, if I don't, then there wasn't any meaning to it at all, right?"

Terryn remained silent whilst Synthesia spoke, simply staring toward the sky as he listened. There was a sinking emptiness within him, a sadness he couldn't really place. He saw the sun disappear behind a sea of clouds, drowning the city in shade. ''You know, Synth. There's something my dad always told me when I was growing up.''
He briefly glanced toward Synthesia, before looking back at the skyline. ''Make sure every day you live is one worth remembering. Whether it's for the bad shit, or the good. You never know when it'll...Just, stop.'' Terryn snapped his fingers. Everything went silent for a second. He allowed the silence to sink in, and smiled.
''Us Humans are pretty weak, y'know? We like to think we're big and tough...But we're not.'' Terryn's eyes continued to travel to the skies, almost as if he was losing himself within the clouds. ''We're only one dice roll away from death. A fatal accident, or a deadly disease. None of us humans are safe from that.'' Terryn grew silent, coming to terms with his own dangeous gambling. Where Terryn could never be taken by a car crash, or a simple disease, Terryn gambled with something much more dangerous. Evil.
''...Granted, your situation is a bit different. But we're not so different, you and I.''
Terryn let out a long sigh, forcing a smile on his face. The Captain breathed in sharply, and nodded positively. ''Alright! Enough of this melancholic bullcrap. We can cry and sulk all we want once we retake that damn city, yeah?'' Terryn turned to face Synthesia, his face beaming with positivity. Granted, most of it was forced, but Terryn was trying to send a message here. He stood up from the branch, and gestured down to the cityscape below with a smile.
''C'mon, I'll give you a tour of our base. How's that sound?''
