Joy kept her head down and clutched her bag close to her chest as the subway rumbled along the tracks. There had been two rows of cabin lights running above the aisle but one had gone out and the surviving bulb flickered near the end of its lifespan. It seemed that despite the train still running, no one had bothered to perform even the most basic maintenance duties. All that could be seen of the outside were the mortar lines of the brick tunnel and the occasional stenciled on sign indicating the next stop.
Expressionless, Joy swayed along with the motion of the train. She reached out with one hand to grab the vertical railing nearby in an effort to steady herself in her seat. There were several others on the train but none had made eye contact with her. It was an unwelcoming atmosphere and tensions were beginning to build as a dispute broke out between two fellows at the front of the car. A young man in a flannel shirt pushed a homeless beggar who stumbled backwards onto an empty seat. The witch couldn’t be sure but she thought the fight was over a hamburger or something like that.
The hot sting of tears welled up in the corners of Joy’s chocolate brown eyes. She didn’t want to be here but she didn’t know where else to go. She’d already checked her adopted parent’s house. It was abandoned and in disarray. A portion of the roof having been blasted off, the floor was littered with dust and shards of broken glass. She kept trying to remind herself that Mr. and Mrs. Conica wouldn’t have abandoned their family home unless their lives depended on it. They obviously didn’t have time to leave a note for her and it had taken months for the young witch to build up the courage to return home. Still, she was certain they wouldn’t have gone far.

The action movie star leaned against one of the walls of the old, filth-ridden train, as it zoomed over the tracks towards its destination. He kept his identity on the down low wearing a black jacket, baggy jeans and some dirty work boots. To hide his face, he wore a cap and some shades he picked up from the dollar store. But what on earth was he doing in the slums? Taking public transportation to go to another place anyone would rather stray away from? Well, the best way for an actor to fill their role is to get themselves familiar with how they would feel and act in a specific scenario! He took his job pretty seriously. And that's why, in his hands, was a note book. He was jotting down everything he was seeing taking place, including the ruckus going on at the front of the train cart between the two men. As much as he wanted to intervene, he not only wanted to keep himself anonymous, but also didn't want to ruin any form of authenticity taking place here.
That motive however, was instantly forgotten about and tossed away as he saw a girl, directly in the seats in front of him, tearing up, huddled to herself as if she were trying to keep herself together. Reece's eyebrows curled slightly, a pout forming on his lips as he did his best to ignore it. Besides it was none of his business...right? Of course, his self conscience wouldn't leave him alone. Digging into his pockets, he grabbed a cigarette pack, no one cares about those no smoking rules in this part of town anyways, and began to conversate with her. "Erm, you cool?" He said, attempting to mask his voice and make it sound more...gruff. Pulling out his lighter, he yanked his thumb on the mechanisms of it causing the thing to spark. "Or did somethin' just get in yer eye?" Finally, a small flame erupted allowing him to bring it to his mouth and burn his smoke.

Joy stifled a little cough and tried to wave the smoke away with her hand. How rude to light up in the confined space of a train! She was immediately defensive, assuming this guy would be just as much of a jerk as everyone else in Badman City. It didn’t help that her nerves were already frayed by the disappearance of her family and the constant nagging sensation that someone else's thoughts were trying to influence her own. The mind control was irritating like a staticy tv in the background that she couldn’t turn it off but so far she’d been able to resist. “I’m fine!” She exclaimed, pulling her bag closer to her chest. “Just on my way home…” She turned her head to look out the window again sniffled as she tried not to think about what a horrible lie she’d just told. Maybe if she were honest with him, he would be willing to help her find her family. His face was good looking and familiar somehow, although she couldn’t remember where, if ever, she’d seen him before. He reminded her of the kind of person who might help a girl in distress. Joy heaved a heavy sigh. It didn’t look like she had many options but to ask the guy for help. “Actually, I’ve lost my family. My home was ransacked and my parents are missing. I can’t find my nieces either! They were students at orange star high. M-Maybe you've seen them.”Joy reached into her purse to pull out some family photos but another wild jerk caused Joy to grab hold of the rail again as the train slowed. It was coming into one of the stations to take on more passengers and she looked up at the signs to see where they were. Reece Matsuo

Reece cocked an eyebrow which poked up above his cheap shades at her response, noticing her reaction to his cigarette. He took it out, exhaling softly, observing her fidgeting about, obviously in deep thought. He was patient though, just leaning against the wall of the train quietly. If she didn't want his help, that was fine. It was none of his business anyways. But on the other hand, he was more than happy to give a helping hand if need be. He just had to be careful not to let his identity slip. Would be a bit of a nuisance to have people freak out about him being on this train, especially when he was trying to help her. That and, in this part of town...wouldn't be the greatest thing if he had a bit of haters, considering how this washed up city became lawless not too long ago.
What she needed help for however more than just surprised him. He coughed slightly as he inhaled a bit of smoke due to his surprise. "R-Ransacked...?" The hell? He would have took it more as some sort of petty robbery if it wasn't for the fact that she also informed him that her family disappeared. It seemed like...like some sort of organized crime. He watched Joy fiddle in her bag to grab something he could only assume was to identify her family with. His eyes narrowing behind his shades seriously as he was attempting to comprehend the situation to the fullest. The train jerked once more, but he simply grunted, keeping his footing. Looking up at the sign, he frowned as people began swarming the train cart. Looking down at the girl, he tilted his chin slightly towards the door. "Erm, this is my stop...? Seeing as you're lost, it shouldn't be an issue to figure this out outside the train right?" If he wasn't stopped for whatever reason, he'd begin making his way out of the train cart, pushing his way through the grumpy crowd who sputtered cuss words left and right after every shove and push.
Finally, Reece exited the train, stepping onto the dirty tiles of the subway. The environment was the definition of ghetto. Trash littered every where, stained floors, homeless people lying against graffiti stained walls. He put a hand in his coat using his free hand to take out the cigarette once more to exhale a puff of smoke. Reece looked at the train, wondering if Joy followed him out or not, all the while contemplating on how he was going to help her with the dire situation she found herself in.

Joy stood up as they pulled into the station. It seemed the man expected her to follow him and he was right to think that if she wasn't headed in a particular direction she should probably stop moving. It was a difficult concept for the young witch. The feeling of frenzied panic brought back by the memory of being lost in the park as a child would have had her riding around in circles for days. What if she never saw her family again? The doors opened and she pushed past those streaming in until she was able to settle into the man’s wake. It seemed appropriate to grab the strange Samaritan's hand so she resisted the urge despite her fear of being left behind. She followed the sweet, earthy scent of tobacco and kept her eyes trained on the back of his jacket. His sunglasses were too reflective to see his eyes but he had a kind voice; soothingly familiar. It continued to irritate her that she couldn't remember how she knew him but for now she would take help from anyone. Once she had caught up she spoke, “Thanks for your help. Do- um…” Joy glanced skeptically around the slum before focusing on the well dressed man before her. She hoped he wasn't expecting some sort of payment for the good deed. Without access to family funds she didn't have much money. In short, she was broke and desperate. “Do you live around here?” Reece Matsuo

"Huh?" He blinked blankly, his mind stuttering for a moment as she thanked him. Reece didn't realize the extent of what he was doing, so having been shown some appreciation actually caused him to fluster up a bit. "Ah, uh, don't sweat it.." Clearing his throat awkwardly, he began to think to himself. Preparing his steps on how to go about this first. Well, recalling the events of her reaching into her purse to grab something, he figured she had something to show him. That would be his first step. Before he could ask that however, she seemed curious about if he lived around this area. The movie star paused, thinking about how to go about this. He needed to choose his words carefully as to not break character and reveal his identity. Though, at this hour, the station was practically empty. Just a few homeless folks sitting in their own little corners.
"Around here? Eh, nah...not too far though..." Reece replied in that gruff tone of his as he made pretty decent efforts in sounding like a tough guy. "At any rate, you got a name? Hard to help you if I don't know what to refer to you by." Reece flashed a feint smirk. But in asking that question, he realized he'd need to come up with an alias. Unfortunately for him, that didn't seem to be a problem anymore. The train they got off of finally closed up, taking in all passengers and taking off at lightning speeds. The gusts of wind tossed off his hat, leaving him to fumble to catch it, clumsily letting his shades slip off his nose in the process. His face would be revealed for that split moment, his cheeks growing a bit red as he hurriedly slapped the hat back atop his head and readjusted his shades. He hoped she had no knowledge of who he was as no one seemed to be around to see anything.

Joy bit her lip nervously. He didn’t live around here but his home wasn’t far. What sort of vague answer was that supposed to be anyways? She wondered, not for the first time, if it were really ok to trust this guy like she did. “Oh, right! I’m Joy Conica. I’ve got some pictures of my family in here somewhere.” The witch rustled around in her bag and pulled out a red leather bound album of family pictures. She looked down at the cover sadly as she recalled finding it in the memory trunk at the foot of the guest bed. It wasn’t the kind of thing Mrs. Conica would have left behind if she knew she might not be coming home. The witch opened the book to the middle, quickly locating a picture of three high school girls. She turned the album around and held it out to him. “Here are my nieces; Shey, Ruth and Tootsie! I think I mentioned them before.”A sudden gust flipped through the pages of the album and she struggled to keep a hold on the only thing that left that connected her to the people who had been kind enough to take her in and give her a name. As she did so it occurred to her that she still didn’t know the man’s name. She let out a gasp, clapping a hand to her mouth and clutching the book to her chest. She did know him! He might not have turned out to be the unassuming hero that she’d thought he was but he certainly played one on the big screen. Her cheeks flushed as she resisted the urge to ask for an autograph. Ruth would be devastated if she didn’t get a photo with him but she needed to prioritize right now. She was certain that Reece Matsuo had good reason to travel incognito and she didn’t want to share his attention with the throng of adoring fans that would inevitably materialize if she let on that he was anyone special. She straightened up and waited for the star to douse his light once more before clearing her throat. “What should I call you?” It seemed a fair question and it opened it up for him to invent some alias to go by for the time being. Sorry for the wait!
