Diablo Desert was a vast wasteland. True to its name, this wasteland was filled with nothing but sand and strange bone-like structures of rock stretching up towards the skies; offering shade to those unfortunate enough to find themselves trapped in such an unforgiving place like this, but besides that it didn't really offer much against some of the predators that occasionally passed through here from Mt. Paozu, like the dinosaurs or even the occasional one or two raider attacks that could happen around here. Or so he was told when he learned about the dangers that plagued these lands from a kind passerby looking out for him. Then again, most people who had the advantage of unlocking their ki were able to protect themselves quite well against such threats, or perhaps even evade them all together simply by flying over it. But Sokka wasn't most people. He didn't want to become lazy and complacent simply because he had this power had his disposal. He wanted to use it when it was necessary and not for every simple thing that came to mind. Sure, sometimes he might slip up once or twice, but he wasn't perfect; every human had their flaws. He kept walking on, barely withholding from wincing as his bare paw pads touched the scorched sands of the desert, and while his attire was very light in terms of covering, beads of sweat still matting his fur down. He stopped walking for a second near the shade of a large rocky mountain, sighing in relief at the drastic change in temperature once he was under its large shade. He decided to rest for a bit now that he found some shade, laying back against its rough surface as he rummaged inside his backpack, taking out his bottle of water and drinking greedily from it until it was almost empty. "Tsk, luckily I have a few more to spare." Otherwise, he'd probably be really screwed with no water in this vast unforgiving wasteland. He pocketed the water bottle — no use throwing it away when he could refill it, later on, he tried to get comfortable against the rock formation and closed his eyes, trying to catch a quick power nap before he continued his journey again.

It was day number five, why she was putting herself through this hell she didn't know, but here she was dragging her dehydrated self through the vapid wastelands of the desert. She needed water and she needed it now, but she was refusing to fly in order to get it. Anything other than that. As she strolled through the sandy hell she thought she would be a goner, but then she sighted a being moving in the distance and they seemed to have a pack on them.
This was too good to be true, perhaps it was another mirage? Either way she had to check it out, she couldn't pass up the chance that it was real. She moved as fast as she could without making herself uncomfortable, slowly closing in on the figure who was now lying down. When she got closer she realized he was sleeping, a tiger human hybrid. She wasn't quite sure what he was, but it didn't matter, what did however... she looked around and quickly locked sights on his pack. Moving swiftly and quietly she rummaged through the pack and pulled two bottles of water downing one in three large gulps. She tossed the bottle over her shoulder and her now free hand grabbed a sandwich she saw in the bag and she started to chow down.
She was so happy it brought tears to her eyes, this was real, it wasn't a mirage. She started to choke on the dry bread of the sandwich, and tried to wash it down with some of the other water she had taken out. She'd totally forgotten about the sleeping figure behind her as she chowed down.

He barely caught a wink — probably only about two minutes or less of sleeping before he felt a shift in the air; something was very close and about to do something. He feigned sleeping still; surreptitiously peeking from a half-lidded eye to try and spot what or who was nearby. He saw a female-figure rummaging through his rucksack; taking out two water bottles and a sandwich and proceeded to eat like it would be her last meal on Earth.
A bushy eyebrow rose at the spectacle before him, though he couldn't really fault her rather unbecoming table manners when he wasn't all that great either, and also because of their current location. Diablo Desert wasn't for the faint of heart, so he was glad that him being here managed to save someone from potentially dying of dehydration and hunger.
He waited until she was done eating most of the sandwich and was halfway done with the second water bottle before he deigned it suitable to speak up. "I'm glad you liked my food." His voice was dark and growly, yet his tone was magnanimous as a brief smile crossed his short muzzle. "Forgive me if it wasn't the best, I'm no restaurant and only learned the basics to survive in the wilds." He took that moment to give her a brief once-over, quickly spotting the oddity that stood her apart from an Earthling.
A monkey's tail.
So she was a Saiyan? That seemed to explain a bit about her table manners, even so, he was curious about why she was lost in a place like this. "What ails you, Saiyan?"

As she tried to save her own life from chocking on the sandwich a voice behind her spoke up and caused her to jump a little out of fright. She moved some distance away in one leap and turned to face the source of the voice, of course she had forgotten about the sleeping tiger. Well, now she had to deal with him. She swallowed what was left in her throat, and continued to eat the rest as she heard him out, rude, yes she knew, but she was hungry and she wasn't going to let this stop her.
"S'a'right," she said with a semi full and dry mouth. Chewing quickly she downed the rest of the sandwich and the water with it before wiping her lips and signing, "Ahhh, that hit the spot." Placing her hand on her hips looked up to the sky and took a deep breath, boy did she feel alive again.
"Nothing at all now, as long as I can keep finding water and food when I need it, I'll be good." She eye'd up the zoanthrope, it was odd that he was out here alone, but then again so was she. "So, why are you out here then?"

The Leopard Monk merely smiled back at her; pleased once again that his food managed to help a person in need around these parts; even if he hadn't been planning doing so when he decided to travel through Diablo Desert. Her comment about finding more food and water brought him some slight pause, indeed it was a notorious trait for a Saiyan to eat a lot of food and water along with it in one sitting, packing it all away due to their fast metabolism as they quickly expelled all that energy in their bouts of fighting and constant training.
In a way, he could relate with her appetite, as he himself was a big eater when he was hungry after a tiring training session with the Monks of Mt. Paozu.
"Why am I here?" He echoed the question back to her, humming thoughtfully as he decided on how to best explain it to her so she'd understand. Not that he was calling her stupid or of slow thinking; but he had a feeling that most Saiyans weren't aware of the concept of enlightenment, or simply to find peace of mind with one-self considering their lifestyle.
"Well, I'm a traveling Monk on a pilgrimage — a journey across the world..." He hedged for a bit as he found the best way to explain it to her. "To unlock my true potential, I must face many trails ahead of me; some will be easy while others would be insanely difficult." He gave a small sigh as he looked back at her, golden-cat eyes meeting her own eyes. "It's why I'm going through this desert; putting my body in a strenuous situation to better temper my soul, so I can push through it and get more powerful."

A pilgrimage he said, a journey across the world? Why on earth would anyone willingly partake in such an activity, but then again she was choosing to walk across the desert for no real reason other than raising her strength. In some ways, this sounded like what this one was trying to do, but unlike saiyans he didn't seem to rely strictly on brute strength to raise his power. A spiritual enlightenment of some sort seemed to be needed for him as well. Was this a trait among the earthlings?
"So essentially the same reasons. Though I believe all this talk of your soul allowing to get stronger is a bit... farfetched, no?' She scratched her head as she tilted it to the side out of curiosity. You're simply making your body more durable by exposing it harsher conditions, isn't that all?"
She couldn't see how it was that the spirit was able to strengthen the body. It wasn't a physical thing, if it existed at all. Still there had to be some truth to this mans words. She'd met a few people on this planet that had been at her level of strength or stronger so far, and if many of them used this strange method the zoanthrope was talking about, then she'd probably have to look into it a bit further.

"Precisely." Sokka gave a small nod towards the Saiyan female. "Let me tell you a phrase that my Master told me before I embarked on my journey: Survive. Adapt. Overcome." The Leopard stood up and stretched a little to get the kinks out of his body after sitting in that position for so long.
"Think of it this way. I'm gonna Survive this trek through Diablo Desert on my own, though if I have to help someone in need along the way it's just a plus there." His eyes seemed to twinkle in amusement for a few moments as he observed her before continuing his speech. "As I walk through this desert, by body shall Adapt to more strenuous circumstances in the future; which leads to Overcoming the trials I shall face later on after my body, mind, and soul become tempered with all the experience I've gathered thus far."
He was silent for a few moments as he mulled that over, wondering if it would actually make sense for the Saiyan in some way. Perhaps if he put a slight spin into her culture it would make more sense to her? "Another way to look at it is by fighting a strong opponent and surviving by the skin of your teeth. You then adapt; training until you're no longer the weakling that you were before, and thus you shall overcome any challenges set before you until the next big fish comes along to make you start all over again."

She simply stared at him as she spoke. Everything he was saying sounded like he just needed to strengthen his body and better his fighting technique. What did it have to do with spirit. She supposed he would need a strong mind to go through certain trials, like this hellish desert for instance, but if you were strong enough then you wouldn't need to worry, no?
Her arms crossed at her chest as she watched him speaking, wondering what his point was, then he came around to facing a stronger adversary. "So in other words you just keep getting stronger to overcome new obstacles." She still wasn't seeing how the enlightenment came into play here, but she wouldn't question the man no longer.
"So talk to me then, how do I temper my soul, and just how does that help me get stronger?" While he wasn't a saiyan his philosophy seemed close to their own. Or what it used to be anyways, even if he wasn't as aggressive about it. Still it wouldn't hurt to pick up a few tricks here and there that could be useful in the future. It might just save her hide.

"Basically." Sokka shrugged his shoulders; rubbing the back of his nape as he briefly looked aside. It was clear he was a bit embarrassed that the Saiyan succinctly redacted what he was trying to say while he loquaciously floundered all over the place. He wondered if he would manage to fully explain it to her; in a way that she would deeply understand on an instinctual level.
His eyes widened slightly then, as he remembered what he learned when he stayed with the monks of Mt. Paozu, especially one of them considering he was the same as her, even if he had been a mere halfling. "It's your fighting spirit, your soul of a warrior," Sokka said with the tone of someone that wanted to scream Eureka and barely managing not to. "I'm sure you are aware of how your kind gets stronger the more enemies you face, but more so when a Saiyan is put through a life and death situation. You always come back stronger from it, yes?"

Her warrior spirit he said, an interesting theory. Yes, Saiyans did get stronger with each fight, more so if they came close to death and recovered from it. Their power tended to increase exponentially, with that said Saiyans didn't actively seek defeat in battle, it was more so that whenever they did lose, when they sought revenge it was not usually that well for their victim.
"Yes, we do."
She thought about the point he was getting at, so him digger deeper spiritually brought more of his strength out of him. Was it possible she could achieve the same results without getting beaten within an inch of her life? "So then explain to me, how does one dig deeper spiritually like that? And how do you turn it into power?"
It was possible that she could discover a different way to draw out her power besides just simply fighting.

"Restraint," Sokka answered immediately, though he was quick to add more as he was sure something like that for a Saiyan was almost too stupid to do in the grand scheme of things. "Temperance, but most of all the Will to search deep inside of yourself for the answer. After all, why do you want to get stronger? Why do you desire that power? What would you use it for?"
He was silent for a moment before he continued, having been down memory lane for a few short moments there. "My Master was insightful into the working of the human body, and their will and determination. As you're probably aware, or might have heard; a person can achieve their potential, or breach the locks holding it at bay thanks to a certain emotional trigger in their lives. It could be anything from revenge from a wrong done to your person, the death of a loved one, to the deep desire to protect what you hold precious in your heart. It doesn't even have to be a person, it can be anything from an object to even a land or the whole planet itself."
His eyes locked on to hers. "You don't have to get beaten within an inch of your life to achieve power. Training works just as well, but only if you have the Will to become stronger, but that will not be enough as you need a reason; a desire for it."

She nodded after his long winded explanation. She wasn't sure she got it all, but if she was going to even bother putting any effort into looking into this particular topic, she needed to know that it was worth it. So standing to her feet she extended a hand towards the cat man. "Well then, if you wouldn't mind putting it to the test then." She took up her own stance. Her left foot shifting forward and bending slightly at the knee. Her foot positioned at the back so that her body stood at side view towards Sokka. Her right heel was raised, some of her weight being rested on the ball of the foot ready to pounce should need be, her fists then came up with her left guarding her jaw and hanging a little loose and low while her right hovered around the temple.
"A quick spar should show us just how tempered your soul is versus mine, shouldn't it?" She did really hope he wouldn't decline. After all that talk she wanted to see just what exactly he had in store. "I'll even let you take the first move," a cocky smirk crossed her face as she attempted to goad him into the fight.
