Fun fact: cats are the arbiters and police of the laws of physics just as much as they are its breakers. While, yes, they break some rules of the universe (such as always handing feet-first), they also oversee them— but they don’t understand fluid dynamics, so they stay away from water. They’re quite finicky about it, which is why they like to decrease the gravitational potential energy of objects (which is why they knock glasses off benches) while increasing their own (which is why they tend to heights).
Nashi, as one-quarter feline, unknowingly, could break one-quarter of the rules. Or, at least, one-quarter of the rules could be broken around him. This is how he got away with watching television late at night (at 9:40PM!).
The Law of Narratival Inertia, which stated that narratival activity and tension tend to stay the same unless acted upon, was not one of these laws. Nashi was having a nice, quiet day; he’d been training for a while and, now, was resting. The scene was relaxed, not tense, and nothing especially important was going on.
To change that, one might need some energy. Narratival energy, yes, but energy all the same. If only something would come along and spice up such a boring day...
