Adverse Possession A Flashback Thread
Chime's PL: 20,000
In the first few days after he found the Lookout, before he became the Kami proper, Chime spent his time exploring. Cobalt, the regent Senbyo, showed him around somewhat, but he had duties of his own in the tower and forest down below, so he couldn't show him everything. So once he was gone, Chime set off to learn the layout of the place on his own. The interior of the buildings were bigger than he anticipated, probably owed to the magic used to create the Lookout, however long ago that was.
It wasn't long until he was walking down one of the long, pristine corridors of the inner sanctum and promptly stopped in his tracks. He sensed something, a presence. It wasn't Cobalt, he couldn't sense that man's ki anyway, for whatever strange reason. But who else could it be? Chime thought he was alone up here. It was too high up, even for birds. He felt a bit of dread creep into his bones. Who could it be? Had they been here the whole time and he just hadn't noticed? Had they just gotten here, and were an intruder of some kind? Would they be nice, or try to fight him?
The little Namekian crept through the hallways, towards the source of the energy he sensed. Finally, he was close, and he peeked around the corner to find...a young man. Decidedly un-intimidating looking, with a mop of messy black hair and, Chime noticed after a moment, horns sticking out. One of the many alien species that now called Earth home, maybe? He couldn't keep track of them all. Or...maybe he was an ogre? He didn't know much about ogres, so it was hard for him to tell. But the man didn't seem hostile. He was just standing there, looking up at a massive wooden door with a stopped clock fixed in the wall above it, with a puzzled expression on his face. It was a room Chime had never seen either.
"Um...hello!" Chime called as he stepped out around the corner, "Sorry if I startled you. Are you a visitor?"

PL: 5,000 How long had he been up here, staring at this door? Daruma couldn't tell. The clock above the large hardwood door never moved, and there was nothing in the room that he could decipher to tell him what it was for. The blank state he had sat in for the past few hours had almost been therapeutic, keeping him distracted from the failures that had driven him to take up living in the secluded lookout of the 'god' of earth in the first place. Pondering one obscure, baseless idea for the door's purpose after the other, he was yanked away from black of his brain by a voice. Turning his head, he saw a Namekian. One of the species he'd come to know during his time on Earth, and that he had seen one or two with bodies roaming the afterlife back in his early teenage years wandering Hell. It took him a few moments to process what was happening, but he turned his body around to face the Namekian in a few seconds and then focuses his eyes to properly address the newcomer. "Hi."The Namekian seemed to think he was a visitor. In a sense Daruma guessed that might be true, but it was such an obscure truth to tell and so he thought cutting out the vagueness was the best idea. "I mean, I guess? I'm from somewhere else, but I uhh... live here." Daruma had been here for about a week or two, having crammed his stuff from the apartment he got evicted from in East City into a little nook nestled in the heart of the lookout and paying a 'wizard' he met on BaoList to come and magic up some electricity and WiFi to power his stuff. Now came another question, this time from Daruma. "So, who're you? I'm Daruma by the way." He was a little out of it today, so Daruma hadn't really stopped to evaluate why the Namekian might have been there. It didn't stress him that much. They seemed to be relatively harmless, even if their energy signature dwarfed his own.

The stranger turned to face him very slowly, and it made Chime frown a little in worry. Was he sick? Or maybe just tired. Either way, he seemed friendly enough, so Chime pressed on. He couldn't help but smirk a bit when he said he was from 'somewhere else', "Well, yeah. I kinda figured you weren't from the Lookout, y'know? So where did you come from before you were here? I'm from Namek," he paused. That was kind of redundant for him to say, wasn't it?, "But, uh. That's probably obvious. 'Cause, well." He gestured to his own green self and cleared his throat before he continued,
"Anyway, why're you living here? It doesn't bother me, you can stay here if you want, so long as you don't mind seeing me around a lot. I'm just curious. My name's Chime!" He gave a brief bow, the orange beads of his necklace clacking together as he did so, "I'm here to...hm." He paused again and set a hand on his chin. How would he best explain what he was here for? It was kind of complicated, and Chime himself still didn't understand all of it. Where to even begin? Maybe Daruma knew something about the place that he didn't. He did live here, after all.
"Okay! How much do you know about the Lookout? It's history and stuff? I know this is where the Kami is supposed to live, the Guardian of Earth. There isn't one now, and I sort of...want to become that, so I came up here to see what I could find out," He shrugged. It sounded like a lofty goal when he said it out loud like that, but it was the truth, "I've mostly just been exploring so far."

PL: 5,000 Daruma turned a little pink, which when mixed with his skin turned purple, when the Namekian commented that it was obvious he wasn't from the Lookout. Breaking eye contact to look at the wall and scratching behind his ear, he listened on to the conversation. When Chime gestured to himself saying he's from Namek, Daruma smiled and nodded understandingly. "Yeah... I've met a Namekian or two on Earth." He didn't really know what to say, so he sort of just scuffed his shoe against the ground and continued to trace his eyes around the space. When Chime mentioned why he was living here, Daruma went a little pale and turned a stronger hue of purple. "I, uh..." Running his hand over his horn and then scuffing it down the back of his hair, Daruma sighed in embarrassment. "I got kicked out of my apartment, and this place was totally empty, so... I kinda moved in." He almost felt ashamed. Shaking his head, he brushed it off and tried desperately to pull back and make eye contact when Chime properly introduced himself. "It's nice to meet you Chime. Sorry if I'm in your way, or whatever." Daruma's heart pounded a little and sunk in his chest as he realized that moving in without permission was probably something that a fanatic of the 'god' of Earth might find really rude, which was fair enough. Despite whether or not 'Kami' was real, Daruma had to admit this place was really cool though. He hoped in dread that he wouldn't be asked to leave. Then Chime asked about the Lookout. Well, more specifically, he asked what Daruma knew about it. Once again, the so-called Guardian of Earth came up. But... this Namekian, he... wanted to become the Kami of Earth? Strange. In Other World, people didn't really 'become' gods. But he did know that lower level deities existed. Things he'd found throughout the ruined lookout did suggest that somebody had lived up there before, and called themselves Kami. It wasn't that far-fetched. Daruma realized he'd been thinking to himself for a little too long, and also maintaining eye contact for a while now despite how thin the veil hiding his anxiety had been. Jerking them to the side, he responded to Chime's questioning. "Well... I probably know as much as you, maybe. This place used to be, or at least legend believes, where 'Kami' lived. He or she was some kind of lesser deity... I don't really know if I believe they were a real god just yet, but I will say this place seems pretty cool." A little spark of excitement spread into his eyes and flushed his cheeks back with color. "There's lots of cool rooms around too!"He pulled out his oniPhone and opened the camera app, pulling up an image of a strange machine covered in colored lights. "Look at this thing? It doesn't do anything anymore, I fiddled with it. But I'm pretty sure it used to be some sort of teleporter." He flicked through a few more images of strange rooms, including one filled to the brim with clocks, one filled with large jars of dark purple water. "These big jars of this gross water made me really angry for a few hours when I touched it so probably avoid it, and- and-!... this room, which was kind of boring, actually." The last room had a picture of some dusty stone orbs on a pedestal and nothing else in the room.

A look of understanding came over Chime's face as he watched Daruma. His flushed face, his shoe scuffing on the floor, the way he kept glancing around. The ogre wasn't sick, or tired, he was just nervous. Well, that was understandable! There he was, in probably the most geographically isolated place on Earth, living alone, and here comes this green guy out of nowhere to ask him all these questions. Chime thought he'd be a little flustered too if their roles were reversed. He looked up at Daruma and gave him the warmest smile he could manage, "If you need somewhere to live, you can stay here! Don't worry about being in my way, it's not like I own the place. Besides, it'll be nice not to be all alone up here. There's some others, like my friend Neo, or that Cobalt guy, but I don't know if they actually live up here all the time."
Chime nodded along as he recounted the legend of the Kami, "Yeah, that's basically what I've heard, too. I don't know if it's really a god, though. It sounds a lot like our Guru, back on Namek, and he's really important and powerful, but he's not a god. And when one Guru passes on, a new one can take on his position," That hadn't happened in Chime's lifetime, the current Guru back home had been in power long before he was born, "So I don't see why it can't be the same with a Kami. It seems like whenever the last one died, nobody was there to replace them...however long ago that was."
Daruma pulled out a device -- his phone, Chime registered after a second -- and started flipping through photos to show him. The shorter Namekian craned his neck a bit to see the screen, oohing and aahing at appropriate points. A teleportation room sounded useful and fun! Maybe they could fix it, or find someone to fix it. Chime certainly didn't have the know-how to do it himself. The jars of purple water were concerning. They seemed like they held something corrupt, maybe magical. He'd have to check them out later, but it wasn't a priority. Then, Daruma got to the 'boring' room with the seven stone orbs. Chime gasped, and grabbed the ogre's arm before he could flip his thumb across the screen for the next picture, "Wait! That room! Where is it?" He tugged the arm down so the phone screen was right in front of his face. He'd never seen it happen, himself, but he knew that if a Guru passed away (or in Earth's case, a Kami), passed away, the Dragon Balls would become inert, and turn to stone. No Guru, no Dragon Balls. Even if they were gathered all in one place, they wouldn't do anything. But inert or not, if Earth's Dragon Balls were all here, that could only be a good thing. It would get him one step closer to his gowl, "Can you take me there?" He asked Daruma as he shook the ogre by the arm.

PL: 5,000 Daruma sighed with relief when Chime told him it was okay for him to stay up in the Lookout. His idea about comparing the Kami to a theological leader of his own kind was also an interesting point to consider. Daruma nodded politely at the prospect, before he had started showing Chime the images on his phone with a smile. Chime smiled and sounded interested at the few cool rooms he'd shown - he seemed particularly interested in the sickly jars and the teleporter. However, the last room Daruma showed seemed to immediately snag the total attention of the Namekian. His arm was tugged down letting the Namekian stare intensely at the photo. A set of maybe six or seven stone stone orbs rested on a dusty pedestal in the center of a decrepit old room he'd found tucked away in the Lookout's depths. He wasn't sure why it was so interesting, but Chime seemed incredibly excited at the prospect of seeing the room. Confused, Daruma cocked a brow but nodded slowly. "Yeah, okay I can show you where I found it. Why is it so interesting though? It's just some dusty old stones on a pedestal."Daruma tucked his phone away in his pocket and thought hard for a moment before gesturing towards the the entrance to the room they stood in. He took one last curious glance at the hardwood door resting beneath the fixed clock, and turned away to head out the doorway. "Alright, it's a bit of a walk given the twisty hallways, but it's not that far away. Follow me." Stretching his arms above his head, he sauntered off into the network of tunnels presuming that he'd look back along the way and spot Chime in tow. At the conjunction between a few corridors, Daruma scratched at his fangs thoughtfully and looked skyward into his memories. Under his breath, he muttered to himself in a strange and uncommon tongue. "Won, erehw saw ti...?" He wasn't quite sure where they were, but from the red scuff mark on the wall beside them he knew they were going in the right direction. Taking the left, he gestured for Chime to keep following and toddled off down the hallway. Passing the room with the liquid inside it, he perked up and moved to a more confident stride. "We're nearly there!"

Chime bounced up and down in barely-contained excitement as Daruma put away his phone. The ogre had known about the purpose of the Lookout and the Kami, but he didn't seem to recognize the stone orbs as inert Dragon Balls. At least...Chime thought that's what they were. He could be wrong, they might be a model or a shrine or something. Whatever they really were, they were bound to be important. The little Namekian could barely stand still while he waited for Daruma to figure out which way to go, "They're not just dusty old stones! They might be Dragon Balls! And if they're not Dragon Balls, they'll probably point me in the right direction." The right direction of what, he didn't specify. If Chime was successful in his quest, and Daruma really did stay here for a while, he'd see soon enough.
He continued to hop excitedly as he followed after Daruma down the halls. They were in a part of the Lookout Chime had never been in before and the hallways still all looked the same to him, so he kept close to his new ogre friend. His ears perked up as he heard Daruma muttering in some language he didn't recognize. Maybe it was the ogre tongue? He'd have to ask later. For now, another question was burning in his mind.
"Hey, Daruma?" Chime asked, "You said you came to live up here after you got kicked out, right? I get that living here is free and everything, but...how'd you end up here? It's kind of out of the way from the rest of the world. You could've just camped out in the woods or something, y'know?" the Namekian's tone wasn't accusatory, he sounded more curious than anything else.

PL: 5,000 Dragon Balls? Daruma recalled reading about them a little in some text he'd found while wandering the halls of the Lookout. He wasn't quite sure what they did, but the implication the text gave was they were somehow tied to the Kami's power to grant wishes. Sounded more like something you'd hear about in the myth of a Ryūshin, those Dragon Gods that many cultures he'd spoken to in the afterlife had one thing or another to say about. Maybe this Kami figure had some connection to them? Daruma shrugged and smiled back at the joyous Namekian. "Well, I don't know about that. But we're nearly there, so you can see if these rocks are 'Dragon Balls' or not soon enough." As they approached the final corner turn, Chime posed an interesting, slightly personal question. Daruma stopped walking for a moment, and turned a little purple from embarrassment. "I... uhhh..."He wasn't entirely sure why he'd moved in here. But... it felt unfair not to give Chime an answer, especially given how gracious the Namekian had been towards him. "Well, I'm from the Other World. Ogres, Shinjin, Genies and the like all sorta gravitate naturally towards the stuff of gods. So I guess this place and it's divine motif sorta made me feel at home." Twiddling his fingers while he talked, he cupped his face once he was done and exhaled loudly, before the purple color left his face. Quickly stepping ahead, he turned the corner and raced ahead toward the door to the room he'd found. A large tattered tarp hung over the entryway, almost completely hiding the room behind it if not for the breeze that made it wave in the darkness. He gulped and suppressed the awkward feelings the little conversation had brought up, and pulled the tarp aside gesturing to his Namekian friend. "They're just in here."

Daruma's face went purple again and Chime worried he had asked something he shouldn't have. He wasn't meaning to pry, he was just curious! He was trying to be friendly, but it seemed like every other thing he said threw Daruma for a loop. Granted, that could just be because the ogre was easily flustered, and not much to do with Chime's questions. And the man was an ogre, just as he had guessed. Chime watched him take a deep breath to calm himself again, and made a point to be extra cheerful as he replied, "That sounds really cool! I've met a couple Shinjin before, they taught me to fly and fight and things like that, but I don't know much about ogres or genies. You'll have to tell me about the Otherworld sometime-- er, I mean, if you want," Chime faltered for a moment. What if that would make Daruma upset again? "You don't actually have to, I just meant I'd like to hear it. It'd be interesting."
Before Chime could trip over his words further, they came to their destination. An old tarp hung over the doorway as a curtain, and as soon as Chime stepped forward and pushed it aside, he felt the energy from within the room hit him like a wave. It wasn't much sheer power, not like someone firing off a massive ki-blast, but there was definitely a feeling in the air of the room. It was magical and dark, and it would've made Chime's hair stand on end if he wasn't Namekian. There wasn't much in the room, just the pedestal in the center with the seven stone orbs resting on it. They were smaller than he had expected, smaller than Dragon Balls by far. Chime approached them cautiously and hesitated a moment before resting his hand on one of the orbs. A wave of dread washed over him, too powerful to be imagined, and he drew his hand back immediately. He bit his lip in thought, then turned back to Daruma.
"These are...I don't know what they are, actually, but they're not Dragon Balls. They feel bad. It's..." he waved his hands in the air as he tried to explain, "You said there were jars that made you get angry, right? These might be something like that. It's not anger, though, it's just...bad feelings. General negativity. Why something like that would be up here, I don't know...they're not exactly well sealed, so maybe they're not that dangerous?"

PL: 5,000 Chime had seemed very interested in learning more about Otherworld, when Daruma explained his origins. He also said that he'd met a couple of Shinjin, something that was a little surprising. He'd seen a few of them dotted around Earth when he'd been searching for members of the Yemma Squad, but not enough that it might be common to run in with them. Daruma felt a little awkward when the end of Chime's excitement seemed to trail into 'walking on eggshells' territory, but when they entered the room he watched Chime's reaction curiously. "You okay?" Daruma asked, but Chime seemed to consumed by whatever feelings he was having, before he snapped his hand away from the stones and turned to explain what he'd felt. "So..." Daruma leaned to the side and glared intensely at the orbs, probing as hard as he could with ki senses to try and pick up anything strange within them. Nothing. Maybe it was magic? Daruma didn't know how to sense a lot of magic stuff. "...they're not dragon balls. What could they be? I can't feel anything wrong with them..."Daruma walked over to the pedestal, and clasped one of the balls in his hand. Lifting it up, he turned to Chime and inspected it carefully, narrowing his eyes and concentrating all his efforts in searching within for something. For a moment, there was nothing more than a stone in his hand. But for a fleeting second, he felt a minuscule spark of something wrong. Something angry, deep in it's core. Widening his eyes, he pulled his head away from it for a moment and carefully placed it back on the pedestal. Is this what evil magic felt like? Daruma honestly didn't know, but it seemed that maybe Chime might know a little more about the subject than him. Turning back to him, he thumbed in the direction of the stones and awkwardly asked his question. "That was weird... Like, I've felt jaki before - but that was very different." He was worried that he might look stupid, so he glanced away when he asked, scratching at his cheek. "Um... was that, uh, magic?"

"Ah--!" Chime gasped and reached out to stop Daruma as he picked up one of the stone orbs, but he wasn't fast enough. Luckily, the ogre didn't seem to be as affected by it as Chime himself was, and simply put it back in place a moment later. He breathed a sigh of relief as Daruma asked his questions, and while he didn't know the answers for sure, he could make an educated guess.
"That's magic, yeah. Dark magic," he told Daruma with a nod, then paused and looked up at his new friend, "Ogres don't do magic...? I'd sort of figured everything in the Otherworld was magical, but I guess that's just Shinjin." He shrugged and then turned back to the seven orbs. He placed his hands on the edge of the pedestal as he studied them, but was careful not to touch them again, "The big question is, what are they for? They've got negative magical energy in them, that's for sure, even you could feel it a little, but I can't see how they'd do anything. Unless they're meant to be used in conjunction with something else? Like a power source? You put an orb in and something happens?"
Chime tilted his head to the side as he continued to think out loud, "I don't think they're dangerous, since they were just left in an unlocked room like this. Maybe they were an experiment? A previous Kami messing around with magic? I could look through the library to see if there's anything about these. It'll take a while tho, there's a lot of books in there."
He stepped away from the pedestal and gave Daruma a smile, "You could help me, if you want! Two pairs of eyes are better than one, and I don't think its forbidden or anything. In the meantime, let's leave these things alone, just to be safe, yeah?"

PL: 5,000 Chime explained to Daruma his thoughts on the balls, and that they were in fact magical in nature. A strange tingling resided in the back of his skull, where it met with his spine, as he recalled the feeling that he'd dug from within the orb he'd held. He looked back at them for a moment, his gaze trained on the one he'd fiddled with as he spaced out for a moment. "Magic..."It was a deeply perplexing subject, which might seem an odd train of thought to someone who was born and raised among the souls of the damned. Something in Daruma's soul had never quite grasped onto the idea of magic and how it worked quite like he had began to master ki. Why was that? Was it because he wasn't a Shinjin? No, that couldn't be it; Wizards were a thing. Was he just not suited for it? The cosmos certainly was a confusing place. Was something wrong about him? Snapping back to reality, Daruma took a quick breath and a moment to register Chime's next few words. "An experiment, huh? I guess that makes sense." Daruma looked a little puzzled by the idea, he'd always assumed magic was something that just sort of... happened, exactly as the person who commanded it intended. Apparently not. Nodding seemingly to himself, he scratched at his chin for a second and then heard Chime continue. "Wait... this place has a Library? I thought that room with all the dusty books was like, uh... actually I don't know why it didn't click that it was a library. Haha." Daruma flashed a little teeth as he laughed at his own embarassment, trying his best to not shy away from his new friend. He didn't want to keep up the idea that Chime might need to wander across eggshells every time they had a conversation. "Sure, I'll help! Books are kinda lame, but this stuff seems interesting. Maybe we'll find out what the big door from earlier was about too?"With that said, Daruma took one last glance at the orbs, before gesturing for Chime to follow and treading off with a little coy smile as he made his way to where he remembered the library being... or at least, where the thought it was. If they got lost again it'd just mean more time with his new buddy, so that eased in his mind and so the second half of this little venture began!
aaaaaand... END SCENE bravo everybody, bravo 👏 Chime
