Hale had spent the last half day walking south from Central City and into what was known as the Diablo Desert. The name was a bit strange as far as Hale was concerned, or at least until he got further into the literal wasteland and found nothing but sand and dead animals. He had managed to find himself about half way through the area when he stopped and started laughing to himself, realizing he had been duped "Well that's what I get." For weeks now he had been looking for a new means of training, a new teacher to train him, and finally he thought he had found something when he was told there was a thriving village this far out on a few people knew about where there were a great teacher. Standing and looking as far as he vision could see, there was nothing that resembled a village, let alone some great teacher waiting for someone to come walking up.
Instead of standing and feeling sorry for himself for being tricked, he decided to walk a bit further just in case, but every step brought that frustration quickly back to the surface. Sucking in air, Hale began to scream as he stomped his foot down and stared up into the sky, knowing no one would be around to hear him. This was a long built up frustration that he had to let out, but the longer he screamed the more angry he seemed to become. His muscles bulged until he started to grow in size and the scream became much deeper and he shifted into his brute form, causing the sand to swirl and encircle him. It finally seemed to crescendo with a scream that was followed by a large blast of energy from his mouth shooting straight up into the sky.

Chime's PL: 40,000
After his stop in Ginger Town a couple of days prior, Chime decided to continue heading east across the continent. A ways past West City was the vast Diablo Desert, and its sprawling sand dunes lay spread out before him as he flew, all the way to the horizon. There were no deserts like this on Namek, and the idea of it both excited and terrified him. Chime was innately curious, so anything new and unknown like this interested him, but the thought of being somewhere so hot and dry, without any water, was scary. Sure, he could materialize some water for himself, but magic food and liquid was a poor substitute, and eventually, he'd need the real thing. He wasn't a fast flier, either, so getting stuck too far out in the dunes and being unable to get back was a real possibility for him. The thought of drying up and turning into a shriveled green raisin floated through his head, and he shuddered. He'd just stay on the outskirts of the desert and admire it from afar, that seemed safe.
...At least, that was what he'd intended to do. He sensed it a split second before he saw it: a great bean of energy shooting up into the air, with sand swirling around the source on the ground. Chime stopped in his tracks and floated there as he peered out into the distance. It wasn't a battle, he only sensed one being out there, aside from whatever little blips of life the desert animals gave off. That innate curiosity got the better of him and, against all better judgment, Chime flew out to investigate.
Out in the sands, he found a lone Arcosian. He looked fairly muscular and strong, and must have been the source of that blast. Chime eyed him with some trepidation. What was he doing out here? Training where he thought no one would find him? Was he with the World Trade Fleet, or was he independent? The little Namekian hovered close enough for his voice to carry down, but no farther, "Excuse me! Mister Arcosian? Not that it's any of my business, but why are you blasting around in the desert?"

All of his power and anger were shot into the sky with his ki, but it all came to a stop as he heard a voice. Given where he was and what he was doing, his first thought was that it was all in his head and this desolate desert was getting to him already. He looked around from side to side with no one in view, squinting even, and it wasn't until he was about to shoot another blast directly into the sand that he spotted someone floating just close enough to see. Was that a Namekian? What would a Namekian be doing this far out? He chuckled to himself as he imagined whoever that was likely thought the same about him.
"Uh, hey. I was just letting off some steam", yelling a bit to make sure they could clearly hear him. He wasn't sure if this was someone he could trust, and it was likely they were thinking something similar. "Been trying to find my mojo as it were in relation to training, but getting a bit frustrated." shrugging a bit with a heavy sigh. "Don't imagine you happen to be some sort of martial arts teacher huh?" giving a bit of a laugh with his half serious half sarcastic question.

Chime cocked his head to the side as he listened to the Arcosian shout back to him. He certainly didn't seem like a Fleet member, or anyone villainous at all. He was much calmer than Chime had been expecting for someone shouting ki-blasts in the desert. After sizing him up for a moment more, Chime flew down closer so they wouldn't have to yell at each other. He still kept a couple of arm's lengths away when he landed, though.
"Your mojo?" Chime echoed, and sounded a bit confused, "You mean you're stuck? Like you've hit a wall?" He rubbed at the back of his head as he thought. Chime's gut was telling him this guy was alright, but his brain was telling him to still be cautious. He didn't want to help out someone that ended up being some variety of evil. Then again, it wasn't really great to judge people before you knew them like that, so Chime decided to go with his gut.
"I'm not a martial arts teacher, no," he said, in answer to the Arcosian's question, "I'm not even sure I'd call myself a martial artist, honestly. Punching and kicking? I'm not so good at that. But! I'm pretty good with my ki, and with magic," He summoned a blue orb of energy in his hand, and then snuffed it out, to demonstrate, "I've been taught by Shinjin and everything! Plus I took this big beefy Heran guy in a fight once," That part wasn't entirely untrue, "So maybe I could show you a few things, huh?"

Hale let out a quiet chuckle and nodded. "Yeah sorry, I've been on Earth so long I'm starting to pick up on some of the odd lingo I hear on television. What I mean to say is- yeah that. I've fought a certain way for so long that I'm having trouble getting to where I'd prefer to be. I simply don't know how." It was pretty evident by the way the Namekian was standing back he still wasn't too comfortable with Hale, and despite getting used to that response, it was a bit disheartening. "You don't need to worry, I have no plans to attack you if that's what you are worried about", raising her arms up a bit as he completely dropped back to his suppressed form. "See?"
Immediately Hale deflated some, but he shouldn't have been surprised, as not every martial artist was automatically willing or able to teach. "Oh, well I guess that's understandable. Wait, magic huh? Like floating things and healing people sort of magic? Or are you talking about making rabbits disappear and car tricks type of magic? I would be pretty amused by either to be quite honest with you." Narrowing his eyes suddenly he raised a single brow "A Shinjin? Aren't they some sort of gods or something? Well, I don't know much about all of that, but hey if you are willing to show me just about anything, I will be more than appreciative."

Chime let out a little yelp, almost inaudible, as the Arcosian called him out on his caution. He waved his hands in the air and tried to play it off as a joke, "Oh, no! I'm not worried. I just didn't want you to be scared of me, y'know. 'Cause I'm so tough, I can be intimidating." He forced a laugh and lifted both scrawny green arms in a flex. Even the natural Namekian muscle definition didn't help him out, it was a wholly unimpressive sight. The Arcosian's form shrunk back down into his typical base, and Chime finally approached closer.
He asked about Chime's magic, and the Namekian smiled. That was a subject he never tired of, "M-hm! More the first one. I'm a mainly a healer, but I can fight a bit too. I've never tried the other kind of magic, but who knows, maybe I'd be good at that too," He concentrated for a moment, and then in a flash of light, a few playing cards appeared in his hand. He looked up to meet the Arcosian's gaze and then, without breaking eye contact, waved his hand and made the cards vanish in a flurry of sparks, "Like that?"
He clapped his hands together to dust the remaining sparkles off them and continued, "Shinjin are kind of like gods, yes. They're supposed to be anyway, that's what I thought when I first met them. But once you get to know them they're...well, they're nerds," he said the word without any disdain. He was a little green nerd himself, after all, "They were good teachers. One taught me to fly, but you probably already know how to do that. The other one...here, I'll just show you! Step back!"
Chime scanned the landscape around them until he found a good target: a rock just a few yards away. He pointed at it, and used his other hand to brace that arm. A bead of blue energy began to form on the tip of his finger, and he closed one eye, stuck his tongue out, then fired. A laser-like beam of ki shot out from his finger, and the force of it sent his short form backward across the sand a good few feet. The rock was left with a small but clean hole all the way through it and continued to smoke as Chime turned to the Arcosian and grinned.
"So? Pretty great, right?"

Hale gave Chime a deadpan and blank stare at his comments of being tough and intimidating, just giving little more than a few blinks in return. He could believe this Namekian was strong, but the way he carried himself was more of a bird waiting to fly off if you moved too fast more than someone ready to intimidate more than a small child. Thankfully his judgement got the better of him and he kept that to himself, finally cracking a smile and nodding as if trying to agree a bit too late. Hale rather suddenly flopped down on his backside, as he had been out walking, screaming, and throwing what could only be considered a tantrum, but kept his attention on the Namekian and nodded again as he explained his magic.
"Oh, so it is healing. I will be the first to admit I know very little about your race, but I've seen one before that could heal, and another who could likely punch a hole through one of those giant transformed Saiyans. I like to try not to assume which is which. Never met one who could do card tricks though." Surprisingly a pack of cards appeared in the Namekians hand just a moment after, then disappear again, giving a bit of a laugh. "Well that's a pretty interesting trick, or ability? Not sure exactly what to call that, but never seen that one either."
It took all he had not to audibly chuckle at the Shinjin being nerds comment, and what definitely not what he was expecting to hear. He raised a brow though when asked to step back, slowly getting to his feet again and moving back a bit and watching curiously. "To answer your question real quick, yeah I can fly but what are you doing?" Tilting his head and watching the concentrated energy cut a hole through a rock. "I can kind of do something like that. Hold on, for a sec...uh, stand behind me just in case". Taking a deep breath, leaning his upper body back, Hale looked back to make sure the Namekian was watching. Leaning forward with a roaring noise a large blast of energy shot from his mouth as the rock completely disappeared, sending pieces flying in all different directions. It was far from precise, just a destructive blast with no grace to it at all. It was pretty clear Hale had missed the point of the Namekian's display by how proud he looked as he turned around. "How's that?"

The little Namekian was pretty proud of his display. A perfectly uniform circle, straight through the rock. No variations or changes in trajectory, just like Kanrin had taught him. He'd be so happy if he could see it! He stood there beaming for another moment, until the Arcosian told him to get behind him. It seemed like he wanted to demonstrate a technique of his own. Chime obliged and got out of the way, but didn't go so far as to hide behind the big alien man, just stood politely beside him, a couple steps back. He was eager to see what this guy could do, since he'd whipped up that brief sandstorm earlier that had drawn his attention in the first place. A big energy blast? Wind powers? Or maybe something icy, Arcosians always had that whole cold thing going on.
And then he screamed, and with his scream came an energy wave that shattered the rock into dust. But Chime wasn't even looking at the rock. Namekian ears were much more sensitive than a human's, or even most other species, and being that close to a sound that loud hurt. Quite a lot. The poor boy clamped his hands over his ears and doubled over as the sound shot through his head. His teeth grit and his ears rang with a high-pitched whine. When he looked back up, he could see the Arcosian's mouth moving, seemingly to ask a question, but he couldn't make out what was being said. He was deafened, though only temporarily.
"What?" Chime shouted back, and sounded very much like an old man on the telephone who thought he had to speak louder for longer-distance calls, "What did you say?"

Hale sported a massive grin as he went on about how he learned to do what he did from failing to control any sort of ki powers and had gotten angry and bam, scream power. The problem was, which took him a moment to notice, Chime couldn't hear a thing he was saying in that time period, though Hale didn't immediately realize why. Hale was completely unaware of how sensitive Namekian ears were, because as far as the less unusual of aliens in the North Quadrant they were the ones he knew the least about. He knew they created the dragon balls, he knew they had magic powers of some sort, and he knew they were green and came from Planet Namek.
Getting closer he narrowed his eyes as he finally got a what in response, then a slow tilt of his head and a partial worry as he wondered if he had somehow deafened the poor guy. Hale started trying to act out things in hopes of communicating, like pointing to his mouth and mimicking the scream, then pointing to his ears then at Chime, trying to ask if his scream made him deaf. "Great, first Namekian I've talked to in five years and I deafen the poor guy"

The Arcosian was going on and on about something, but Chime couldn't make out any of it over the persistent ringing in his ears. He realized what had happened pretty quickly after he spoke and barely heard his own voice, either. That massive scream must have blown his eardrums out, or something like that. Chime was a healer and a mage, not a biologist. It stung, whatever the technical term was. He was yanking on his own earlobe in the hopes that would do something when the Arcosian finally noticed something was and started to do some kind of charades to try and communicate. Thankfully, they didn't have to devolve into miming things back and forth, as Chime's deafness cleared up on its own a couple of seconds later. He heard "--poor guy." Still muffled, but audible.
"Hellooo?" Chime said, experimentally, and grinning when he could hear himself again, too. It sounded like he had cotton balls in his ears, but that would probably clear up in a few minutes, too, "Okay, phew! Sorry about that. That was a really good move though. You can do damage and handicap them in one go! You don't blow out your own hearing, right? Or did you already make yourself deaf by screaming so much, so it doesn't matter?" He didn't seem upset about the shouting attack hurting his ears like that. On the contrary, he seemed more curious now than ever.

Blinking with a raised brow, Hale leaned in some "Uh hi" giving a bit of a wave "Oh good. You had me worried for a sec there." His face contorted at the mention of handicapping them, genuinely worrying for a bit he had made the Namekian deaf. "Sorry about that, really. I guess I hadn't thought much of that. I mean I knew it was loud but it hasn't ever had that sort of impact on my own hearing. It is pretty strong though and if I do it too much it kinda hurts my neck from the way it pushes me back." Giving a bit of a shrug and rubbing the back of his neck reflexively.
"You do think it's a good technique though? I don't have much control of it, but I figure with time it could be effective enough to do some damage." grabbing his jaw and moving it a bit he grumbled a bit "and it does have the side-effect of hurting my jaw sometimes cause of the energy sort of shoving itself out so fast." Moving a bit closer to Chime he put a hand on his shoulder with an apologetic and guilty look on his face "Seriously, sorry about the hearing. Maybe this is one of those times for a lesson. You seemed to have a pretty good handle on your own ki. I can blow stuff up real good but I don't think I could do what you did....for example " Hale turned around and pointed his finger towards another rock formation and focused, but when he released his energy it simply came out and a dark green stream that almost seemed to widen and just blew off the top of the rock. "That...well that's about the best I can do trying to do what you showed me".

"It hurts you?" Chime repeated, still speaking a bit louder than he normally would, "Well that's no good. You shouldn't get hurt by your own technique. Especially since you can't heal yourself like I can." He stood back again when the Arcosian tried another attack. It looked like it was supposed to be an imitation of Chime's Kanrikosen, but it came out entirely wrong. A big green blast, instead of a precise beam. Once it was clear again, Chime hopped out in front of him, excitedly.
"Oh, oh! I can explain how it works, if you want!" he chirped, and didn't wait for an answer either way before he barreled on into it, "This is the way I understand it, anyway. So your ki is like water, right? And your body is the vessel. Like a cup or a bucket or whatever. And if you were to take the sides down off a bucket, then..." The little Namekian took a few paces back and concentrated. His ki glowed around him in a blue aura...and then it shifted. In an instant, his aura grew larger and more powerful, and shifted from blue to yellow. Some sand got kicked up during the shift. Chime just grinned.
"...It spills out! In all directions. But what happens if you only let out a little at a time? Instead of taking the walls off the bucket, poke a little hole in the side," As he spoke, his aura died down to a faint glow, barely visible in the desert's harsh light. At the same time, a bead of energy appeared on his finger, just as it had before. He pointed it as the rock Hale has blasted just a moment ago, and fired another perfectly round hole through it.
"See? Your ki isn't static, it's energy. It wants to be in motion. You don't need to force it out as much as you seem to be, you just need to give it some direction."

Giving a bit of a shrug, Hale nodded, "Yeah, I imagine you are right. I'm sort of chalking it up to how when you work out but you don't know the right technique for lifting. Eventually you learn, your body becomes used to it and so on. Maybe I'm wrong, I admit I'm not an expert on these sort of things. Though you are right, I can't exactly heal myself, and given that I don't have any of those magic beans I keep hearing about, well yeah." His eyes widened as he watched the excitable Namekian, giving a single blink and slowly nodding. "Oh, well sure. Please do." The Green Magician was already going into his explanation before Hale even finished his sentence, a brow very slowly raising.
"Yeah, water, uh huh." Nodding along, "Right vessel with water, got it." nodding again and blankly staring. "Oh, yeah cups. Love cups." rubbing the back of his neck with a smile "Yeah, oh man those buckets and, yeah water everywhere." If he could have made chirping cricket noises in that moment he might have, but he kept watching as Chime's aura flared, which grabbed his attention far more than he water analogy than went right over Hale's head. Hale reached out his hand trying to mimic Chime, pointing as energy began to form at the tip. "Alright so I just do it a bit but don't just release it all at once...uh..." His finger just kept glowing more and more as the energy turned into what looked like a small ball hovering just past the tip. "Wait but now what?" He looked as if he were straining and pointing his finger trying to shake something off of it but the ball just kept growing bigger ever so slowly.
"I think I'm doing it wrong" Suddenly the ball just sort of fell from his finger and looked to almost float, unfortunately it floated straight down and exploded at Hale's feet, sending sand shooting up into his face and a following coughing and spitting. "So that sucked.", wiping the sand from his face.

Chime nodded his head encouragingly as the energy began to gather on Hale's finger, "Yeah, just like that!" he told him, clearly very excited, "Next you just...um..." before he could figure out how to explain what came next, the ball of energy floated out of Hale's hand, straight into the ground. It exploded, and sand shot up into the air around the both of them. Chime actually got knocked back a couple of feet, and spent a few seconds coughing from inhaling the dust.
"Oof. It didn't suck, it just...wasn't very good?" was Chime's poor attempt at consoling him, "I didn't get it at first, either, it took a lot of practice. It blew up in my face too, literally. But...that water analogy didn't help much, huh? Did it just make everything more confusing? Hm..." He brought his hand up to his chin as he lapsed into thought. What else had Kanrin said, when he was first teaching him.
"It's like...hitting someone with a boxing glove on, versus hitting someone with your bare fist. I, um, don't really understand that one much actually, I don't tend to punch people, but maybe it'll make sense to you?" He gave a couple of mock punches in the air as he spoke, "I think the point is to use the energy you have as effectively as possible, without wasting any, or hurting yourself. It'll probably take a while of practice, and you don't have to do the same Kanrikosen I was doing, but that seems like a good starting point. It's simple, y'know?"
He crossed his arms and tilted his head to the side, "Hrm. I'm not sure how to explain it better than that! I guess I'm not a great teacher yet. If you have a question, you can ask, though. ...Oh!" He slapped a hand over his face as he realized, "I never told you my name, did I! I'm Chime."

Hale's face heavily contorted at the response he got from the Namekian, and he knew he was trying to help, but the mixture of patronizing and truth in the same breath, coupled with the sand still in his face didn't make him feel much better. "It's alright, even I know that was bad. I guess I'm not the most precise when it comes to a lot so maybe it just isn't my thing ya know? And yeah the water reference went over my head a bit, sorry." Spitting again to get the rest of the sand out of his mouth, he wiped his face and sighed a bit. "Maybe being as precise just isn't my fighting style, maybe that's the problem. How can I word this, hm." Hale looked around for a moment and did a bit of a pace back and forth.
His eyes focused on the punches as he tried to follow what he was saying, tilting his head to the side. "Okay, yeah I get what you are saying there, yes. " He made a face that looked as if he were overall impressed, even doing so again after sharing his name. "You Namekians always have interesting names from the ones I have heard." Hale started to pace again, then stopped and exclaimed. "Okay I think I have this figured out. So you are good at magic, you know how to heal people and do all that sort of thing. Me, I'm good at being strong I guess, I can punch a hole through just about anything. So like you said, I don't need to be able to do exactly what you can, but what I need is to just improve what it is I'm already good at, yeah? I don't need to shoot precise shots, I just need to improve the way I shoot my screaming blast for example." He looked rather proud of himself as he had figured out a mostly obvious epiphany. "Maybe what you can help me with is that. Take what I'm good at, maybe incorporate some of what you are good at the enhance or stream line what I can do. You are obviously smart, so I don't know where I'm going with this now, but do you get what I'm saying?"
