It was, ironically, in hell that Paige would find the best spots to "train" by herself - though calling the imitations of actual martial movements training was a white lie at best. Though to be fair, it wasn't like she really had anything to really go off of. No teacher or general guides or anything... just a vague attempt at utilizing her innate Ki to do things. Attempting to form her life energy in a way that was meant for hurting others felt... off, but in the end it was a necessary thing no matter what her feelings on the matter was.
Besides, this method of practice also was apparently responsible for the gradual increase of one's Power Level. It was... fairly obvious in hindsight, but she would rather be late than have never discovered it. Her end goal, as it was, from this training was to raise her own power to a level where she could protect herself from a majority of the evils that plagued the mortal realms. She hoped it wouldn't be necessary given her practice in the art of 'blending in' - but precautions on such an important task would never be misplaced.
So she had had ended up a bit further out from the iconic red lake - in a field of short grasses. Her scarf and cloth clothing had been discarded in favor of skintight black cloth and basic boots. She felt a bit weird in the attire given she had worn her previous outfit... her whole life (magical cleaning, after all) and so had never really changed out of it. The sensation of the somewhat saggy clothing being replaced with only a thin layer of clothing was alien. Though, purportedly, it was made to not break under stress.
Perfect for practicing like she was, going through basic movements and motions in an attempt to prepare for her journey ahead. Paige took a break, sighing and sitting cross-legged on the ground below as she thought over her actions. Foolish enough she was not, to fall for the thought that this was quality training - though she still find herself far too... hesitant to as the residents here for help. What sort of person in HFIL would want to help a weakling Shinjin? Most of them would probably run her underfoot if they didn't wish to get any sort of punishment (real or not) for the people running the after life.

Kalabas woke up that morning in a fairly good mood, which was quickly soured by a glass of orange juice drank not even a minute after brushing his teeth. He partook in a first and second breakfast but the acrid taste lingered in his tongue, which reflected on his now even more aggressive looking mien. Despite his scowl the Duke was fairly calm, having decided to spend the day training, not because he had some cretin threatening his life and people but because his energy needed an outlet and his stress ball had burst into flames the day before. The nearby gym was packed full and the dojo a few blocks away was closed for maintenance, and although the ogres were diligent people, the saiyan decided to find somewhere else to train and. Kalabas ventured to the red lake and then a bit further, finding a stretch of greenery. There he saw a blueskin, a shinjin most likely, and felt her energy signature a moment after… It wasn’t pitiful for a non-combatant, but guessing from the choreography she was putting herself through, Kalabas surmised that the shinjin had just started threading the path of the warrior… or the way of soldier? He didn’t know enough about the fruitborn to understand their fighting philosophy, but from what he saw they clearly needed a change in dogma. The damned soul watched as the shinjin either took a break or gave up on the whole thing, her stoic expression was very hard to read, which was disheartening. Amusing at it was to watch a complete amateur struggling with the basics, there was also a tragedy about it that compelled the martial-minded Duke to approach her. “Greetings. I am Kalabas Strongbone, late Duke of Strongbone, recently deceased and all, so you might not have heard of me quite yet.” was there a way to phrase his thoughts without souding mean or patronizing? He didn’t care much either way. “I was looking for someone to train with. Instead, I found you, someone who clearly wants to better their technique, but appears to have only the faintest clue on stance, footwork, and few other things. So, I propose the following, I drill you on the basics, and in turn you...” Kalabas smacked his lips, shrugging. Was there even a thing he could gain from this? “Teach me about the workings of what goes above.” Kalabas pointed upward, either at the bleak red sky or heaven “Unless that is some sort of breach, lore that would run afoul if known to mortals, I'd rather keep my sanity intact, all things considered.”

Paige had just been about to stand and continue her efforts until an unexpected arrival caught her off guard. The Kai turned, the faintest flicker of surprise evident on her face as she was approached by a soul. She hadn't expected to really interact with anyone out here, though given that the people down here were stuck for as long as their souls lasted - it wasn't all that unique for them to latch onto new things or people to interact with. With her focus torn from the small area around her, Paige's natural energy sensing kicked in - a monstrous Power Level flaring up.
Upon closer inspection, the tall imposing figure and energy signature seemed slightly familiar. Paige frowned for a moment, attempting and failing to recall who exactly it was. It appears it was unnecessary, though, given how the Saiyan came forth and introduced himself in an audacious manner. With the way he declared himself as 'Duke Kalabas', the Kai could only assume that he was of some important stature in life. The tone behind the words eluded the Shinjin's detection, Paige wholly unused to deciphering the meaning behind someone's words. Thankfully, it seemed he was much more sober than before, though that also appears to have led to him forgetting their short meeting.
"Er..." She said awkwardly at first, fumbling for a proper response. "Hello, Kalabas. I know of you, to an extent." The truth, but that wasn't because he was important enough to resonate into the afterlife.
She hadn't been expecting his deviance from normal topics in favor of commenting immediately on her poor attempts at training. He was right, of course, but that didn't stop Paige from making an unreadable expression in response. "You'd train me? It must be a slow day if I'm the most interesting thing for you to interact with."
"Er, I can tell you about a majority of the Kai's culture. Nothing that would... 'explode your head' or cause you to lose sanity. To be honest, one such as myself can hardly be considered worthy enough to dub themselves as a 'Kai'... So if you wish, you may call me Paige." She shifted in place, unsure of what to do next. "If it suits you, I also plan to travel to the Mortal Realms soon. Have you unfinished business or want to deliver a message to someone still alive, I could do such for you."

“To an extent…? That is good, I suppose, an unknown opponent is the most dangerous of all.” Kalabas flicked his fingers, producing a miniscule ki blade on his thumb, it alone was about as powerful as two Paiges “But that, of course, is common sense.” He began picking his teeth, delicately, silently, as the shinjin voiced her surprise on the noble’s boundless charity. “It is a day no slower or faster than yesterday or the day before, Hell is Hell and redemption only can see me through it. Call it a… selfish altruism, since I enjoy fighting and teaching others how to fight.” What’s more he knew of a little one waiting for him in the realm of the living, and he had a mind to actually become adept at teaching before returning to her.
Assured that what he could be told would not cause his spectral Id to gnaw itself in more than concept wholly, Kalabas sighed in relief knowing that he could safely learn such things as the hierarchy of the gods. Even if his source doubted her validity as member of her kind. “That is nonsense, you look as capable as any other Kai I have laid my eyes upon.” granted, he had headbutted the last shinjin he had met through three consecutive walls, but she had called him a mayfly mortal and should have known better than instigating the wrath of a newly-dead. Without Kalabas expecting, Paige offered to aid him in his unfinished business should he have any, the Duke was delighted “Why, that is very kind of you! I would be eternally grateful if you could deliver some correspondence in my name! Aah, but... you have no idea of the sheer quantity of words that have remained unsaid between me and those I hold dear, this task might take too much of your time, but if you are still willing to help me with this…” Kalabas balled his fist and punched his palm, sending a small shockwave “I will teach you everything I know, until you become as mighty as I!” he launched his fist forward, offering it to be bumped “Do we have a deal?”

The casual manner in which the Duke handled power twice her maximum was certainly a concrete affirmation that yes - he was indeed someone to be respected in at the very least a combat setting. His proclamation but a moment later only supported that, Paige not doubting that his experience nature in regards to fighting could potentially be part of the reason he was in Hell to begin with, not that the Shinjin planned to ask him about it anyway. Paige nodded along, arms crossed in a semi-protective manner as the Saiyan continued.
She'd be lying if she claimed that that Kalabas still didn't intimidate her - even after the reassurances and seemingly generous offer of training. His claim could easily be explained by a lack of Kai to even compare to her in the first place... or a majority of the Lesser Shinjin given that the Saiyan's Power Level was immense to the point of absurdity. "I'd find it not at all problematic, Duke." Paige offered diplomatically, not wanting to turn off her chance at growing stronger.
"I have the time and methods to burn and utilize to deliver a... reasonable amount of Otherwordly mail given our session here proves fruitful." Caught off guard by the casual gesture of Kalabas sticking a closed fist out in a similar fashion to a punch, Paige's Earthling culture training kicked in as she recognized the move and returned it in kind with a light tap of her own, a more genuine smile coming across her features. "Consider it a deal, though I don't I can get on par with a warrior such as yourself in a short amount of time... not to insult your teachings, but faults would be mine own in inexperience and hesitation in this subject."

Fists were bumped and master and student were smiling in agreement, all was well in the Otherworld, and going to be better, so hoped the saiyan. Kalabas grabbed the shinjin by the wrist and helped her up, “Inexperience can be trained away and hesitation beaten out of your system, what’s more, you’ll find that I am of a more crafty sort than most. Now, awe at this.” The saiyan’s power signature fell dramatically, down the million mark and to the hundreds of thousand, then sinking to the low thousands and below even that. His power hovered around seven thousand but Kalabas forced it down even more to match Paige’s, it was almost like fighting his self-preservation instincts. The saiyan felt sick, brittle, unused to handicapping himself to such great lengths, even for a cause as good as this. Kalabas let go of the shinjin and jumped back, putting a reasonable distance between the two. He began stretching, feeling his muscles and life force operating at a fraction of their true power, a sensation he was finding hard to get used to “Be free to criticize my teachings if you feel that aught needs to change, better that than waste both our eternities.” He flared his aura, it was almost clear and transparent, too tame for the Duke’s liking, who much preferred the usual garrish flames. Again, he reminded himself that this was for a good cause, and that his student had been extremely polite to him so far, so he forced himself through the reverse vertigo and steadied himself for the beatdown he was about to ask. “Here's a simple task, I want you to hit me until I draw blood.”
This would test Paige's raw might, but it would give Kalabas a glimpse of her true character, the monster underneath that aloof expression... if there was even a monster at all. The Duke had discovered his too late, and he would much rather know Paige's before beginning training in true. “Now, you may begin. Feel free to teach me about your people while I writhe and gasp in pain.”

The deal was sealed, a spark of joy rolling around in Paige's chest as Kalabas effortlessly pulled her up. Only a single concern passed through her mind at that moment - it was clear to both of them that his Power was far, far beyond hers. How did he intend on training her in a practical manner without accidentally popping one of her limbs off like a toy? It wasn't necessarily the pain she feared - but rather, if she 'died' Paige would be stuck to Otherworld which would completely defeat Hangan's mission in a single moment. That was until announced he was... doing something worthy of awe!
All of a sudden, his energy signature spiked for a moment to its' peak - before dropping like a rock does off a cliff. Down and down it went, plummeting and slowing only slightly as he weakened himself further. Soon enough, the energy he was outputting matched her own to a T - to which Paige admitted it certainly was an impressive feat. She knew there were some capable of masking their own energy signatures, but this felt more... concrete. Like instead of a mask it was self-imposed bindings that truly restricted the energy he was capable of outputting. Certainly, a very practical ability for instructing prospective students already much weaker than oneself.
His grip disappeared, the Saiyan hopping back in a smooth motion and limbering himself via the method of stretching. Paige had no need to, given her own body was always in a 'prepped' state and never got cramps or soft from disuse, but she followed along anyway. Perhaps it was the key to training better? "I'm sure that whatever you try is certainly better than the disorganized mess I was trying, Sensei," Reassured the blue Kai, arms held loosely at her sides.
"Until you... bleed?" She paused, hesitation etched on her expression. "Enough force to puncture the skin and cause blood to flow from the resulting wound... I suppose I can try, if this is what must be done. Shall you stand firm and take it, or... well, I suppose I should just cease my babbling and get on with it." This whole situation was entirely new to the Shinjin, but she did her best to take it in stride, approaching Kalabas with a confident stride and stopping right before him.
Of course, the sheer size difference between her odd (normal for some mortals, she supposed) height and his colossal stature - nearly a foot and a half taller than her. Paige was still uncertain when it came to the instructions given to her, but hesitation was no longer an option - as it would be very much disrespect at this point to disobey. Her aura flared to life, flickering wildly like a bonfire before she reeled it in, lightly cloaking her skin like candle light.
"I suppose if we are mixing cultural lessons with tests of might, I can start with something basic... and you can ask questions about anything I can and will answer afterward. If you are still capable of asking more, it means that my strikes are obviously ineffective. To begin..." Paige took a wide stance, pulling her fist back in concentrated determination before letting it fly towards the Saiyan's torso. "Most of us don't actually know how to fight!"

Sensei? Kalabas grinned, somewhat amused, this blueberry was already growing on him. He’d tell her about his preferred titles later, now was not the time to distract her with small talk, she needed bring out what in her was most savage and pummel the Duke flat. And so he was… surprised, to say the least, when the shinjin hesitated but gave a thorough and accurate definition of a hemorrhage. She made it sound like the concept was somewhat alien to her, as if her people were bloodless, something that Kalabas was sure he would soon find out this very battle.
Paige strode closer with growing confidence, only to stop before the Duke and unleash her power as an aura of respectable size. “Not bad.” but what truly impressed Kalabas was the way she cloaked herself with ki, this level of control from a complete upstart was most unexpected “Not bad at all!” The student fell into a wide stance, making known that she’d be using her master’s diminishing inquiring capability - his fading consciousness, interpreted an enthusiastic Kalabas - as a metric of her success. It was adorable, how she thought she could ever knock him out cold. He was Kalabas Strongbone, Duke of Strongbone! Then he remembered they were quite evenly matched in terms of raw power, a constraint that made him take the challenge with a smidge more seriousness. Just a smidge.
The first step in the cultural exchange came as a simple statement that Kalabas tried and failed not to scoff at “Oh, is that so?” Vindication for the honor of the entirety of the shinjin race came as a punch that took the breath out of the Duke’s lungs, but only very briefly. “If your opponent stands without guard like I am, there is no reason not to strike him on the head.” The saiyan still stood in place, his stance relaxed with his arms folded behind his back. He slowly craned his upper body forward, neck stretched, offering his head to be struck. It was almost like he had a trick up his sleeve. “Come now, have at it. Speaking of heads, who leads the kais?” a simple question for which he expected a simple answer, to ease into the other, more complex ones in had in mind.

Her initial strike failed to have nearly as much impact as Paige predicted it would, the punch at best slightly winding the Saiyan who failed to even really recoil. A flicker of surprise caused her aura to slightly flare up for a moment, the Shinjin taking a small hop back as she surveyed the situation. She hadn't expected him to keel over, for sure, but with similar Power Levels perhaps... something more. It could be attributed to his ease with fighting already - experience leading not to nullification but mitigation of pain and blowback.
His reaction to her first statement, as unfortunately expected by a warrior, was negative. Best get the worst things out of the way now - and lying about it was an option, just not one Paige herself would take. "It is so." She said a bit solemnly. "Our duties are as watchers and cultivators, not activists and reapers. With no inherent need to fight or take the lives of others - the majority of Kai are often weak themselves when it comes to fighting. Our powers can grow immense given the right situation and a bit of luck..." Paige paused, biting her lower lip. "Unlike myself. 'Born' with no extraordinary natural ability. Such is life."
He reprimanded her for the first attempt, speaking out of pure logic which Paige understood but failed to comply with. "Well, yes, of course. I just... er, silly and foolish of me as it may be, I don't wish to risk seriously harming you - or your current 'form' as some call it. Like I said, we're nurturers instead of harvesters so our fighting instinct is practically non-existent. However... I shall attempt it again, aimed at your... head."
Paige, with clear trepidation, drew near once more, repeating her movements from last time. Instead of the chest, however, this strike was aimed at his jaw, the Shinjin unknowingly holding back as the attack went to meet with the still target. Upon connection (or lack thereof), she'd pull back a bit - prepared to answer his question. "There isn't really 'one above all' when it comes to specifically Shinjin leadership, though I suppose the closest thing we have to heads are the Supreme Kais. Overseers of the cardinal directions of our universe, with the most famous being that of the North - or 'King Kai' as he is colloquially dubbed. They surpass the average Kai's power by an immense amount, though even I am incapable of discerning by just how much. Still, even they pale in comparison to the God of D- er, well, that isn't technically something I am supposed to be sharing at the moment, for forgive me on the last part."

As a fine warrior from a fine warrior race Kalabas struggled to wrap his head around the existence of a people without a need for violence, or inherent ambition to grow stronger. Perhaps their divine nature allowed them such luxuries, were they a living ‘normal’ people like any other then evolution would have made prey to any and all capable of chucking ki or even spears. Having their strongest chosen out of luck rather than toil… it made no sense! It was the opposite of the social hierarchy of Vegeta, one so firmly established on power that even a low-born could with time and effort carve himself a spot in the elite should he have the drive, the sheer force of will, to triumph over others! But, in Kalabas’ eyes Paige had more in common with this hypothetical low-born saiyan than the image of a typical ‘indolent and passive’ shinjin he had in his head. With time she would grow stronger into a fine warrior, he was sure of it.
Paige was hesitant on seriously harming the Duke’s otherworldly vessel, which elicited an internal ‘aaaaw’ from him. So he was supposed to be nurtured and not harvested? “You’re just being silly now. I fought opponents the likes of which could glass entire cities with a flick of their wrist, hell, I tried to that on Arcose, so if you fear you might grievously maim me out of one head be assured that I willed it so. Now, punch me.” Kalabas was punched, and faintly bruised. He could tell Paige was still holding back… He popped his jaw back in place, gave it a couple of tentative stretches as he heard his student talk about Supreme Kais and a King Kai (did she mean King of Kais?) until she stopped herself, refraining from talking about some God with power beyond that of the Supreme King of Kais, likely for fear of blowing her master’s fragile mortal psyche. He would sigh, and disappear.
He appeared again right in front of the shinjin, placing both hands on her shoulders in a gesture he hoped was reassuring and not in any way creepy or invasive. “You are holding back. I can tell, because I am still standing. Pray tell, how can you hope to improve if you do not put the whole of your spirit behind even the barest minimum of what you do? Do not be afraid of me, or hurting me, be afraid of stagnation, of being beaten, of failing to achieve that which is to you most precious, to protect those that you love, to kill those that you hate… You may deny having a fighting instinct, but you must have an instinct of some other sort! So weaponize it, be it fear or desire or compassion, know that all is kindle for strength, for wrath, for self-betterment. Some day, someone will depend on you, perhaps even yourself, to beat another. You mustn't fail then, you mustn't fail now.”
His grip tightened into a painful lock. “You are seized by an opponent, how do you escape?

Paige realized belatedly that she had literally 'pulled her punches', the hit doing next to nothing against her faux opponent's open and unprotected jaw. She wasn't sure when her power behind the blow had been reduced - but it had happened nonetheless. Perhaps some sort of automatic 'safety' system built in to avoid hurting her... friend? Mentor? Either way, Kalabas had proven to be a valuable and kind person to her - so hurting him felt wrong even when she tried to look past it and focus on the training. Paige paused afterwards, fist unballing and awkwardly opening and closing for a moment as she considered her next move.
"Kala-" She had started to say, automatically falling silent as the Saiyan began speaking. "Yes, I... I know you aren't actually frail. That would be an insult to your actual power and achievements, and it was not my intent to do that. I apologize." The Kai glanced at the ground for a moment as a show of humility, hoping she didn't offput her recently made mentor by her actions. "I- huh?" And just like that, he was gone. There one moment and not the next. Paige's eyebrows furrowed, her legs automatically taking a step before he re-materialized in front of her.
Her eyes flashed in surprise, Paige jerking back a bit instinctively but otherwise making no vocal indicator she'd been caught off guard. She made no attempt to shift or move as Kalabas gripped her shoulders, hair falling across her face to cover her eyes as he spoke. "It's... I just... I know what you're saying. I totally get it. My whole life up until recently has just been menial tasks and mostly disrespect. I was created unimportant and if I hadn't met Hangan... I'd still be like that. I wouldn't be here. Wouldn't be searching to get stronger or talk to the denizens of the afterlife. The rest of my 75,000 years would be spent doing the same degrading task over and over, and I would've accepted it without hesitation."
She glanced away, not bothering to squirm free of Kalabas' hold. "How can others count on someone like me if I can't even count on myself?" The battlefield was no place for introspection, and soon enough her next task was at hand. The grip on her tightened, the pressure digging into her corporeal form.
"Ah! Uhm, perhaps something like this?" And then she changed - aura washing over her body as it shifted in shimmering blue light to a smaller and thinner stature as Paige attempted to break free, and if successful, would leap backwards before returning to her normal size in a flash.

Kalabas was sympathetic, perhaps even- Wait, 75,000 years!? No wonder that the other shinjin had called him a mayfly, these people lived for ages! His mind boggled at how short his full life would have been in comparison, it made him feel... wronged. It had taken him twenty-three years to become a super saiyan, how many more would it take for him to be able to overpower Yemma and reunite the worthy damned to the living? He briefly recalled those mysterious artifacts he had seen but never touched, the dragon balls, relics capable of bestowing eternal youth, immortality, and great power upon any brave or lucky or crafty enough to gather all ten… or were they six? One thing’s for sure, they were his. “Hm?” distracted, Kalabas noticed too late that Paige had literally slipped through his fingers “HMMM!?!?” the surprised saiyan fell into a fighting stance, leading foot in the front, legs slighting bent, torso hunched forward, and fists hanging steady by his side “How the devil did you do that, Paige?” even in afterlife Kalabas still underestimated his opponents, it was a fault he was very well aware of, but this? He had never seen anything like it! “The potential for such a technique… Y-you could jump inside someone and blast away their heart, or fly through their ears and brains and…” his shock, perhaps even fear, swiftly turned into surprise and excitement. This was his student, and already such a gifted one! “By the ancestors lass, you are quite something! Hahaha!”“But.” Kalabas continued, suddenly serious, one finger raised and wagging “Do not think that tricks alone are enough. You can think outside the box, granted, but I have yet to meet the saiyan - well, shinjin in this case - capable of outsmarting this.” His hand opened fully, blasting without warning an execution beam that obliterated a green canopy of trees in the far, far distance. Burnt wood chips rained on the fighters for a violent couple of seconds, like snow but harder to breathe in or pry off one’s hair. Kalabas regretted this botched attempt at impressing his student, sighing under his breath as he hastily clawed ash from his expansive mane. “Block... or dodge as you see fit, friend, this will hurt you if you are hit. You do not want to be hit, alright?”

Paige took an automatic step back as Kalabas realized she had slipped free, the Duke falling into a combat ready pose out of what looked like sheer instinct. Something had distracted him - more than likely the root being her words - and she could only hazard guesses as to why. Perhaps shock at the lifespan of the Fruitborne? Surprise at her life's recap? Regardless, he seemed impressed by the technique. "Ah, I, uhm. Well, it's nothing terribly special. I picked it up not too long ago in preparation for my trip to the mortal realms so I may more easily blend in. While using it to greatly alter my body to an extent like the ones you suggest, I am unable to harness my Ki for any notable usages of it."
A tad bit unfortunate, but the sheer effort and control it took to maintain a microscopic or colossal form prevented her from using attacks that would devastate an opponent from the inside out. Not that... she really wanted to, but the point was still there. The news would probably disappoint her mentor, but it was imperative to be as forthright as possible now instead of trying to rectify a bad situation later. "Well, yes, I don't expect shapeshifting alone to-" Paige had started in response to Kalabas, getting cut off by his casual beam of destruction which rained wood dust upon them. "-Help that much."
"That's certainly... impressive." She commented, taking a step back as she shook particles of wood from her hair. "However, here I feel I must tell you... I don't have a technique capable of blocking or dodging the speed and power of yours - that's with us at our even power levels." The Kai rung her hands together, eyebrows furrowing in concentration. "Like I said, we aren't really fighters and I have nothing I could do to prevent getting hit by that."

Kalabas wondered if perhaps Paige would be interested in serving in the Royal Intelligence Agency, despite her being a shinjin, and him being dead. Shapeshifting... He ran through his head a number of uses, some military, some very much not so, for such a strange yet fascinating ability… Was she able to…? No, that’d be silly, the Duke was inimitable, and their power levels and styles too different for it serve as true mirror training. Still, he’d probe her on her ability later, along with a handful of other questions he was saving until after she recovered from the absolute and utter annihilation she was about to be put through.
Her awe at his attack made the Duke giddy with pride, Belle reacted the very same way when she saw how powerful his attacks could be! And this, this was only a fraction… He half-hid a smirk that quickly vanished once she admitted having no means to defend herself. It wasn’t like him, attacking those unable to protect themselves, but this would have to be a learning experience for the shinjin, and it wasn’t like this was going to be his first attack on a helpless target... He again remembered Belle, shocked as an attack more than a thousand times stronger than her came at her faster than she could process and… No. Those things belonged in the past.
He whipped his arm forward, taking aim at his student, a deathly ki sphere flickering to life on his hand. Now, it was his turn to hesitate, not much, just a very minuscule twitch on his thumb and index. “Hmph.” he dispelled his attack and shut his fist, instead firing a kiai at the ground Paige stood on. He followed by charging at her with a flying kick, aiming at her chest, a move that was relatively easy to block or dodge but ultimately not the true aim of his attack. While airborne he whipped out his headband from his forehead, crashed beside Paige, and snapped it on her head immediately. “I must insist that you keep it!” he said as he adjusted the elastic band to better fit her head, combing her locks from under it “By the power invested upon me as the once-living head of the Strongbone Clan, I, Kalabas Strongbone, mark you as an honorary member of my own.” He nodded in approval, decapsuling a small mirror for the shinjin to look at her gift “I trained my child, and in turn I was trained by her father, who learnt how to fight from his grandfather, it's a... tradition of ours, the Strongbones, to mentor family only, and showing our approval with headbands, it is rather... silly, I suppose.” He stepped back, capsuling the mirror, giving his apprentice a thorough look, “Of course, you are free to reject this position, it'll be no stain on my honor or grudge on my mind, worry not.” he lied, like the lying liar he was.

Luckily for her, Kalabas begrudging accepted her explanation - refined point of Ki dying off as the Saiyan released the power. It was equal parts gladdening and saddening - Paige knew she would be unable to wishstand the Duke's assault, but at the same time she hated having to disappoint him this early on. Bowing her head in self-inflicted humility, Paige straightened to see her mentor lost deep in thought. Was her ability really that fascinating, or was it just the Saiyans that were incapable of it? Well, based on Kalabas' reaction and experience, it was unlikely that was the case, but assumptions could turn into one's worst enemy if left unchecked.
Something felt slightly off, as if the microscopic twitch of his mouth and the half extra second in which he stayed silent spoke volumes. Was something wrong? Paige eyed him in concern, hands moving to clasp in front of her body as she stayed quiet. Twas' not her place to interject when someone in Hell was lost in thought, especially considering the topic material they could potentially be combing over. It could potentially just be him considering what to do next given Paige's ineptitude on combat and how to train her most efficiently, but the Kai would let unspoken words lay to rest.
"I apologize in advance if my limitations have also limited you or your methods in the context of teaching. To me, it was more practical to focus on activities that are possible to do. If that's a problem-" A shout startled Paige, Kalabas having recovered from his temporary doldrum to launch into a less powerful - but still fierce - attack. Which he so happened to initiated by... yelling energy at her location. The Kai attempted to dodge, barely moving in order to avoid the initial attack while she got caught by the follow-up, boot grazing her chest as she bent backwards and flailed her arms, attempting to keep her balance.
"N-nani!?" The started Shinjin half-yelped, regaining her footing in time to find a piece of cloth suddenly wrapping around her... head? Not neck for a choke hold or anything? Paige stayed obediently still as Kalabas ruffled her hair to properly adjust it to her size, ears twitching in curiosity at what this whole thing was about. She didn't have to to wait long, though, as her mentor offered an explanation with no prompting moments later.
Mark as his own...? For real? A mirror was presented, which her hands wrapped around instinctively, falling slightly as the Duke's grip lessened and she took on the weight. Paige blinked, adjusting the angle to see the now extremely important accessory upon her head. The purple, she had to admit, matched very nicely with her own skin tone and hair color. "Are you... sure, Sensei? That you want some weakling like me to carry the importance of your gift?"
Ruby eyes stared back at her from the glass surface, split bluish tips of her hair swaying lightly in the simulated breeze around them. "N-not that I refuse! No no, that isn't the case at all. It... I just, well..." For the first time in fifteen years, Paige was at a near loss for words at the situation. "This is an important and heavy decision, and though your judgement is not flawed, I fear that I shan't live up to your expectations. If you... believe in my capabilities, then I vow to meet them to my upmost best efforts!"
