Born to one of the most prestigious clans on Luna, Reg led a very sheltered early life. He was the only egg to have been laid by his mother after years of trying to obtain an heir for the Raion clan. Once he hatched, Reg was coddled and pampered and taught how to be a proper heir to the Raion clan. He wasn’t allowed to go outside most nights due to his frail constitution. He got sick often and wasn’t allowed to make friends with other children. He wasn’t allowed to do many of the things that ordinary Lunarian children got to do. It only grew worse when they learned that he had been born with the incredibly rare ability to travel through light. His family brought gurus to visit him and school him in the ways of enlightenment. If there was a chance, they wanted him to lead the family on to glory and prosperity for all time.
Reg did not enjoy the restrictions and discipline that his family forced on him. He often ran away as a child, escaping through the gardens to play with the other children. Inevitably, he was caught and brought back to their home, but there was one child who promised to be his friend no matter what. Her name was Chara. She would often come to the edge of the garden and help him escape so that the two of them could play together. The time came when Chara had to undergo her rite of transcendence. She promised that she could come back to see him after it was all said and done and show him her wings. Reg waited, but she didn’t come back.
Worried, Reg asked his parents to ask after her. His father disapproved, but his mother relented and made some inquiries. A few days later, she took him aside and sat him down in the garden. She told him that Chara had died during her rite. While it was rare for that to happen, sometimes it did happen. Distraught and saddened, Reg retreated to his room and was inconsolable for a long time. His mother made excuses for him to his teachers and servants of the family to allow him some privacy and time to properly grieve his friend.
A year later and it was time for Reg to undergo his own rite. Anxiety filled him as he was sealed inside of his own cocoon under the watchful eye of his family members. He waited. For something to happen. For the visions that his family had prepared him to see to spill out before him. He waited. After what seemed like forever, Reg grew uncomfortable and eventually fell asleep. His dreams were troubled. He saw himself in chains, forever tethered to his clan’s home. Generations of his family passed before his eyes. It wasn’t long before they all started looking to him like he was some sort of god. Horrified, Reg woke with a start to see a light hovering inside of his cocoon with him. Actually, there were two. One felt warm and motherly. The only felt playful… and familiar. The playful one booped his nose like Chara had so many times before, and Reg understood.
Luna was giving him a chance to escape his fate because of Chara. Reg smiled through tearful eyes and cupped his hands around the small light that was Chara’s soul. And, with that, he vanished from the cocoon, traveling through Chara’s warm light out into the universe to adventure and freedom.
