On a small island just off the coast in the Southern tropics, there is town with a mediocre population who prides itself on its self-sufficiency and lack of need for technology. This town is called Spei. Many villagers parade around the streets peddling goods, selling whatever they can and inviting tourists to learn about their culture. The buildings are sturdy and made mostly of metal, which is surprising considering their overall denial of modern normalcies. New Spei seemed like a land out of time. Taking a look back, it was relatively new- one might even call it a baby still. The story behind it, however, is not one of a dream, hope, or even spite... but of fear and a need for escape.

This morning was just like every other for Whisker. He woke up when the sun rose to begin training with Master Tini, and for the most part the morning was as calm as ever. The breeze was gentle and warm, and the smell of fresh baked goods from the village wafted pleasantly and mingled at the nose of every student at the dojo. As they practiced their forms, Master Tini heard something off in the distance and asked them to continue their practice without him for a while. Minutes passed with no sign of the master returning, and Whisker grew worried that something was seriously wrong. In a hurry and as stealthily as he could, he snuck off to find Master Tini and figure out what was keeping him.
It didn't take him long to find the old man, though he was just standing there on top of the hill looking out at the sunset. The sunset? But it's still mid-day! At least that's what he thought, though he couldn't see the sun through the tree tops. To surprise his master, Whisker snuck up behind him, waited until the last possible moment, and lunged at his leg, giggling and pawing at it playfully. "I got you Master Tini! That'll teach you to slack o-" Whisker stopped dead and looked out at the sky. The red and orange hues were not from the sunset... but from the village. Smoke rose high into the sky as fires blazed through homes. Screams could be heard faintly as bodies collapsed to the ground and were covered in dirt and smoke. Flashes of bright blue light could be seen every now and then as strange metal contraptions that looked like hairless people tore through the streets and slaughtered everyone in their wake.
"...Run Whisker. We need to go." Master Tini whispered to Whisker, gently pushing him back as tears formed in his eyes. He didn't understand... What was going on? Why were people falling down? Who were these metal men? He hesitated and shook his head, then tried to run. His feet would not move, no matter how hard he tried. He was stuck there like a deer in headlights. Master Tini slapped him hard and yelled at him again. "RUN WHISKER! GET THE OTHERS AND GET AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN!" As Whisker fell out of his stupor, his feet finally started moving, sending him back towards the dojo as fast as he could manage. He assumed that Tini would be behind him, but the moment he turned around, Tini leapt into the air towards the village to do what he could and save as many people as possible. When Whisker made it back to the dojo, though, things were not as they were moments prior. The dojo was on fire and bodies littered the ground like dirty laundry. As he turned a corner, he saw two other students running from more of those metal men. In a moment of panic, he launched himself forward, headbutting the creation and sending it flying through a wall. It hurts... he thought, but as he held his head, the students ran to him and grabbed him by his paws, pulling him away and to a closet where they covered his mouth. Hordes of metal men rushed past, looking for anyone they could. The three of them stayed in that closet for as long as they could until the fire began spreading too close to them. Then they ran. They continued to run, and the further away from the dojo they got, the easier it was to hear the fighting, the crying, and the screaming.
After an hour of running, they saw what looked to be a ship. Whisker had seen these fly overhead before, so these were nothing new to him. But this one didn't seem like a merchant ship. As they ran towards it, Whisker stopped and looked around. "I can't leave without Master Tini!" He said to the other two children. "Come on Whisker, we have to go!" The first student urged him to follow, but he tore his hand away and ran off in search of his master. He ran and ran, avoiding the robots along the way and searching desperately for his Master. When he finally saw him, there were heaps of scrap metal around him and more robots coming at him from all sides. He had taken substantial damage but wasn't about to give up yet. Whisker rushed in to help his Master, taking out a couple of the robots himself before one large metal creature stepped in front of him. He tried to fight it, but nothing was working. Then, the robot pulled out a sword and thrust it down towards him. He shielded his eyes, thinking this was the last time he would make such a mistake... Then he felt something warm. As he looked back towards the monster, in place of the sword piercing him, he saw the back of his master... with a sword through his chest. What happened after that? Whisker can't recall. He went completely unconscious, and when he woke, he was aboard a ship and flying through space. That ship would become the very foundation of New Spei. And two years later, the story truly begins.
Modern Day New Spei
In the Speian Orphanage, Whisker spends his mornings the same as he did on Konats. He trains harder and more fiercely than ever before, only eating and sleeping when his body can't handle any more training. Today though, he took a break to walk around New Spei in hopes of finding something interesting to take his mind off of things. The town was lively around this time of year. It was colder due to the December weather, but being in the tropics as it is, cold was still quite warm. Still, Whisker walked around town, taking in the sights, looking at all the decorations, lights and various oddities. He deserved time off once in a while, and he had been training so hard lately that his muscles were getting sore, so he looked for anything eye catching that he could focus on for the time.
