She also has several piercings in both of her ears.
BACKGROUND:
This story started many years ago aboard a stealth frigate commandeered by treasure hunters, or as they were known to those who knew of them, thieves. Late in the career of saiyan Captain Cumber and his family-like crew, found themselves in a race against a fierce band of pirates in search of what many believed to be a myth; a haul of treasure unfathomable in size from possibly the greatest heist in known recorded history. They and their crews had gone to the ends of many earths, cheating and fighting one another in gain of clues and artifacts that would lead them further along the trail of the fabled pirate Captain Nion’s treasure. In the height of the chase the crew captured a space-fairing scientist by the name of Raymond Wiloh, whom was at the time conducting research on his latest invention for his ship’s FTL drive. Due to a series of mechanical faults, Raymond’s ship would go up in flames, forcing the earthling to share passage aboard the saiyan’s ship. Believing the scientist might be able to assist with their hunt, for whatever reason, Cumber insisted the earthling would receive his own share of the treasure if he cooperated. The four year journey itself was as perilous as it was thrilling; a series of life threatening events that tested the crew in both bond and spirit. Though despite the vigor of their search, the crew would fail to find the breakthrough they needed to keep going.
Over these years Raymond became closer to the captain’s sister Cherry, whom had made it known she had grown tired of the lifestyle. Truthfully she simply desired a change, one that Raymond hoped to help provide with his return to Earth. Per their agreement, Cumber delivered the pair to the scientist’s home after Raymond had deciphered the last clues in the saiyan’s journal, leaving his youngest brother Wally to look after them. For several years the crew continued their search, while in that time the pair left on Earth had a baby girl whom Raymond named after his grandfather. In this time Raymond did his best to divide his time between his new family and revitalizing his company, it often left Ren in the care of her mother and obnoxious uncle. Despite Cherry’s strict oversight, she grew into a very rebellious toddler that Wally would then teach tricks to con the other earthling kids in the neighborhood. Before long the pair had convinced most of Ren’s friends on the street that the enigmatic “Turtle Lady” lived in the emptied house at the end of the road, and whoever so visited her would never be seen again. To prove she existed, Ren lured a few of her friends into a few harmless prank traps she had set up around the spooky looking house. Many of these tricks resulted in Ren becoming a bit of a problem for Ray’s time, forcing him to make changes about their living arrangements at home. They bought into a new house in a new neighborhood with enough space to accommodate Raymond’s laboratory, so that he would be able to work from home to keep a better eye on his daughter. It was easy enough to say that Ren had a hard time keeping friends.
Some few weeks after this brave change, with somewhat positive results, Captain Cumber & the treasure hunters would return to reclaim the rest of their “family” to continue the hunt. Much to Raymond’s disagreement, the family were taken back into the fold, never to return to Earth for almost ten years. During this time Ren would become drastically influenced by the crew and her two uncles, while remaining under the strict tutelage of her father, whom strived to teach the girl what he could of science and math. By the age of thirteen Ren was capable of assisting Wally in repairing the ship’s engines with relative ease under instructional oversight. She became adept in astronomy and cartography through the many sleepless nights spent helping uncle Cumber chart his maps under the glow of the stars. With time she also became quite skilled with cooking and self-defense combat from her mother, while the ship’s quartermaster Beet did his best to educate the girl further on trade and commerce at nearly every outpost and station they seemed to visited on their travels. Beet’s son, Turna, would often get Ren out of these lessons with whatever ludicrous idea of fun that seemed to pop into his head, which was often prone to landing them both in hot water with the adults.
It was during one of these trips that Ren discovered she possessed an uncanny ability to sense the energies of others around herself, even in a comparative means to her own. When she brought this up to Turna in a sheepish manner, she was rather surprised to find him ecstatic about the revelation rather than upset. Wanting to believe Ren rather than tease her about it, Turna would devise a test, by having Ren serve as a lookout while he aimed to nick some jewels off some nasty looking mob men. After getting caught and enduring an exhausting chase through the markets which they would barely escape, losing the stolen gems in the excitement. Turna would later boastingly regale the tale to the crew about his latest shenanigans, letting slip Ren’s part in the heist. Eventually the news reached Raymond in time, whom agreed with Cumber’s proposal that Ren be trained to properly hone these skills for their usefulness. Thus she began training and sparring with nearly everyone in the crew per her uncle’s orders, despite her father’s insistence her lessons be strictly applied to self defense. She failed to see the benefits of them beyond self-preservation, yet would eventually come to terms with how they might be used to help others in need the further she trained.
For four years they pursued other fortunes and leads throughout the furthest reaches of the Old Arcosian Sector, often encountering World Trade Fleet patrols and rival treasure hunters during their excursions on a number of exotic worlds. Some excursions were met with success, some with bitter failure, yet something was always to be gained in some light or another. Some time shortly after Ren’s seventeenth birthday, Cumber would stumble upon the biggest clue to Nion’s treasure to date. The captain’s obsession with this pursuit made its inevitable return to the crew’s lives, as did the saiyan’s greatest rival, the buccaneer Toma, with a renewed hatred for Cumber and an army of mercenaries at his disposal. The race for the treasure took them two years and halfway across the galaxy, where a ship to ship skirmish would force the crew to make an emergency landing on Earth. For most of the crew it was no different than any other stop, though to Ren it felt strange being back, even if she barely remembered her time there. Raymond and Beet would have a hard time finding the parts they needed, prolonging the stay longer than Cumber desired, which inevitably brought about a lot of tension around the ship. To get away from the anxiety of the constant infighting, Ren took it upon herself to explore more around the spaceport, and eventually more areas of the city connected to it.
One day when Ren was out on one of these excursions for supplies, Wally would somehow manage to stumble upon the last piece they needed for the ship. Within hours of the find the ship had been fixed, yet in Cumber’s eagerness to resume their chase after Toma and the treasure, the crew would depart the planet believing Ren was somewhere onboard. Much to her dismay when she returned to where the ship had been, everyone had left her behind, without hardly a handful of zeni in her pockets and no way to reach them. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, Ren decided to wait for them to return, and so she waited for three days. Having burned through any rations and hope she still had, she would set out into the city once more in search of work and shelter to further bide the time. With any luck she might find a way to reach her family, wherever they may be.
