It started a week ago, when a funny little machine that bleeped and tickled when it touched his skin had been used on Kabe by the doctor. Since then Captain Curb's Squadron, Nyaku, Uria, Barb and even his mother to a degree had been kicking up a fuss about how today was supposed to be special or something. He didn't really understand what a birthday was. Barb had tried explaining it as a day that celebrates how old you are. Kabe thought that was silly, as getting older meant you were closer to dying of old age. Pebre and Gatza had likened it to a party for yourself, like a little celebration of you. Kabe liked that idea, but didn't understand why all his friends would come.
But still, they sold him on it easily when they said there would be lots of food. The big day came, and Kabe was in a park chowing down into a full platter spread layed out beside the parked Stormbreaker before any of his guests had even arrived. "Prince Kabe, shouldn't you be a little more patient? You'll disappoint your friends if there is no food left."
After a moment, Kabe frowned and put down the sticky buns he was stuffing his face with. "Curb right. Kabe wait." Sitting down, he waited patiently for his friends to arrive for his birthday!

Kayen had been a bit surprised when Barb had come to her about the idea of throwing Kabe a party for his birthday, she’d stopped putting much stock into her own birthday after leaving home and subsequently the idea of celebrating other birthdays was likewise a mostly foreign concept to her, she had only really found out Kabe’s because she’d had Barb do some research to pin down when he was likely born for the purpose of knowing exactly how old he was, sure Kabe could give an answer himself but the reliability of that answer was probably a bit dubious.
Apparently that had been what had set this all in motion as while Kayen had just filed away the date as generally useful information for knowing Kabe’s exact age Barb had remembered it as something they needed to celebrate, along with several others.
While confused at first Kayen certainly had no intention of denying a party for Kabe, as long as Barb was willing to take up the task of explaining the concept because she was CERTAIN Kabe would not already know, Kayen gave the others who were invested in the celebration free reign to spend what they needed to get it done.
Kayen exited the ship and rolled her eye at what should have been an expected sight, Kabe shoving enough food in his face to be considered perhaps a bit excessive even by Saiyan standards, the boys apetite was a genuine marvel “Hey kid, you ready for the party?” Kayen asked with a grin as she walked over to Kabe and Curb giving Kabe a pat on the head once she was near.

"Queen Kayen!" Curb stood at attention and saluted the queen as she approached, as rigid and stiff as a well worn board. "I'll leave the prince in your capable hands, then." Now that Kayen was out here, there was no need for him to stand so closely to Kabe, leaving him to walk over and assist Gatza, Pebre and Garmdori in laying out food and setting up the party. Eyeing the food anxiously as he'd put it down to be 'polite' to his guests, or whatever that word for being nice and caring about feelings was, Kabe saw the approach of his mother and brimmed with a wide smile. "Mama!"
As she pat his head and Curb moved away, he nodded hastily at her question, his eyes glancing back toward the food and then to her again. "Yeah! Kabe ready for party!" Kabe wasn't really sure what to expect when the party started, honestly. He knew there was lots of food and that Barb had worked with him to invite all his friends, so they were all going to come very soon, but there wasn't much more he could remember. Now that he thought about it, he also couldn't remember when his friends would come. "How long to when Kabe friend come, mama?"
Admittedly, it was news to Nashua that Kayen had a kid of her own. She felt like maybe she'd heard mention of it once or twice before, but something about the Queen of Vegeta did not particularly strike Nashua as 'motherly'. And yet, something about her did convey that, but in maybe more of a commanding, authoritative sense. Still, she definitely did have a son, apparently, and that child had just had his birthday. Which was funny, considering Nashua's own day of birth had just passed only a day prior. Her mother and father had brought her a small slice of cake and tried to get her to come to do something fun with them, but she'd ended up having to just eat the slice in her office while she did more work. Lately, when she looked in the mirror, the bags under her eyes seemed more and more prominent, and the bright, golden hue the eyes themselves once had felt as if they'd become more of a muted yellow.
Some time off felt like it'd do her well, and the invitation to the party seemed like a solid enough excuse for her to take a temporary leave from the ice planet. Especially since her leave had been ordered by the Queen of the Saiyans herself - it was a bit tricky to refuse an invitation from her. It was customary, as well, for birthday hosts to receive a gift as part of the celebration, but Nashua hadn't a clue what kind of thing this 'Kabe' would like. She'd heard he liked meat? That was all she had to go on, really. So, she made sure after she landed on Earth to swing by a game shop, and put down a pretty penny on the biggest hunk of meat they had: a whopping 630 pound bear. Lobbing the thing up into her ship had made for an... Interesting challenge, but she'd made it to the party with her gift properly in tow.
"Hi!" she exclaimed, forcing a jubilant tone and a smile as she entered the party area with the dead bear draped over her back. It didn't take her long for her to spot the skyscraper-like Kayen standing rather high above all others at the party, to whom she made her way over. "Sorry if I'm a little late," she said in a more exasperated tone towards the Queen, "Work has been completely killing me for the past, uh... When did I become Queen again?" She then glanced to the side, and noted the short little Saiyan boy standing right by the Queen. That must have been Kabe, right? She hoped so. "And you must be Kabe?" she said, forcing the smile back onto her face. "Well, I brought you, um, this." She leaned forward and allowed the dead behemoth of an animal to roll over her head and plop down on the ground in front of them, it almost making Kayen herself seem on the smaller side. "I had just uh, heard he likes to eat meat, so... I got meat," she explained to the Queen with something of a surrendered shrug.

It was a busy few hours at Nero’s apartment. He was making sure everything was all sorted out for the rest of the day before he and little Pankaa were ready to go to Kabe’s birthday party. Luckily, the celebration was going to be in a park that was pretty close-by, only a couple minutes walk, it wouldn’t take longer than fifteen or so minutes to get there.
Nero neatly organized everything with Pankaa’s assistance and got Pankaa’s favourite little outfit with the bunny overalls for him to wear. Eventually, Nero put two capsules on the coffee table. He motioned for Pankaa’s attention to make things clear. “Alright Pankaa, we have everything ready for us to bring to your friends party. I’ve sorted out food and extras into this red labelled capsule. Your gifts for him are in this little blue labelled capsule.” Nero smiled, he had no doubts that Pankaa was equal parts anxious and excited. The little guy barely understood the concept of birthdays after all.
“Would you like to carry the blue one or should I? If you want me to carry it, I’ll give it to you when we’re there so you can open it and give the gifts to Kabe.” He gave Pankaa a firm and confident nod of encouragement. “I’ll let you explain your gifts to him too if you would like, since you took the lead on getting them made. How does that sound?” Nero patiently waited for Pankaa’s thoughts and decisions before speaking up once more. ”You’ve really thought these gifts out Pankaa, I’m so proud of you. I know Kabe will really like them.” He added, pocketing the orange labelled capsule.
Nero checked the time for the hundredth instance in the past hour, and it was getting closer to the arranged time for the festivities. “Okay, we should get going soon. If you have everything you want in your backpack, we should go. It would be good to be on time.” Once more, Nero waited patiently for Pankaa to sort himself out, but he was sure that wouldn’t take long. Oftentimes Pankaa’s excitement for stuff overwhelmed any or most anxiety he had— should Pankaa sort himself out quickly and already scuttle off to the door, Nero would move to keep the pace and offer to carry Pankaa if he wanted to be carried. Following their exit, Nero locked up the apartment and they were on their way!
Soon enough, the two would arrive promptly enough; and the first thing Nero noticed was a ship, a pretty big one at that; sort of imposing but mostly pretty damn cool! Now, Nero wasn’t a massive gearhead, but he knew his way around vehicles, spacefaring or otherwise and this was something worthy of his awe. “Hey, Pankaa? What do you think of that cool ship?” He quietly asked while approaching the group at the gathering. Instantly recognising Kayen, Nashua and Barb out of the bunch. “Yo!” Nero confidently announced his and by extension Pankaa’s presence with a wave of a free hand. “Apologies if we’re late. How’s it going?” He gave something of a mixed bag smile, he wasn’t all too sure what to fully think of Kayen just yet, but he wasn’t going to let his grievances ruin what was supposed to be a fun day— today was about Kabe, and having fun.
Speaking of the birthday boy, Nero spotted him pretty easily given the description that he was given some time ago from various people, and he looked like he was the center of attention anyway, so it was an easy guess. “You’re Kabe yeah? Well, happy birthday! So, both me and Pankaa have some gifts for you— but I’ll let Pankaa give his to you first.” He said, nodding to the Avali. ”Go ahead, champ.”
Today was the day! The big day! The big big birthday! Who's birthday? Kabe's birthday of course! While Nero was focused when it came to getting ready, Pankaa could hardly keep himself from bouncing off the walls in his excitement for his friend's big day. Of course he too would have to get ready though or else they wouldn't be able to go! That could not be allowed to happen, so the avali did his best to bottle his excitement as the saiyan helped him slip on a favourite outfit of his which was promptly followed with Pankaa bouncing up and down on the spot- It was his bunny overalls afterall so therefore he was bunny and bunnies hopped.
Hopping however got exhausting pretty quickly and he didn't want to waste all his energy before even getting to see Kabe! So with the hopping halted he would then look to Nero as his attention was called for. "Extras for Pankaa? Is there pancakes?!" His feathers would puff up lightly in excitement and the moment Nero asked if he wanted to carry the blue capsule his little arms would shoot outwards as he made grabbing motions, "P-pl-...Peas can Pankaa carry it! Promise I be careful!" When Nero said he'd also let the avali explain his gifts Pankaa seemed to nod like he wanted to but he pouted at the same time as his ears flattened back. "Papa... Pankaa not good at explaining, but I'm try! Kabe present is very special" The avali smiled warmly and would bump his head against Nero's hand if allowed to, rubbing his head feathers against the saiyan. It always made him happy hearing Nero was proud of him, even if it was over something that seemed small to others. "I hope he does, Papa"
Pankaa would double check that he'd placed everything in his little backpack when it was pointed out that they should get going soon. Seeing that he had his favourite toy and all of the things Nero mentioned he should take as well already in the bag, he then scurried over to the door while zipping it up properly along the way. Swinging the bag over his shoulder and slipping his other arm through it's other arm hole, the avali was ready to go! Soon enough they were out the door with the apartment locked behind them. To avoid wanting to pull Nero along Pankaa would take up the saiyan's offer to carry him and instead excitedly vibrated atop Nero's shoulder as they drew closer to the party.
When the big ship came into view Nero probably would've noticed the young avali slink back and almost 'hide' behind him as his ears flattened back looking up at the space vehicle, his eyes wide before he promptly hid his face away in Nero's clothing, only peeking out when Nero asked him a question to which he responded with a scared look. "It's very big... Lots bigger then Pankaa" He mumbled an answer softly but in all honesty he didn't know what to think of spaceships since the last one he had been on was full of nasty avali. The visual of the ship was also enough to remind Pankaa that Kabe's birthday wouldn't have just Kabe there, or Nero for that matter and he felt an anxious knot rise to his throat as they finally arrived to where everyone else was. Sure enough there was certainly a handful of people he hadn't seen before, but Kayen was also here too and he knew her!
Pankaa looked a little surprised when Nero was so casual about his greeting even with Kayen there and would quickly cast a glance between the two of them from Nero's shoulder. Was he missing something? Did they talk things out? Where they okay now? Or was something else going on? Adults where confusing! He shrugged it off for now but still gave Nero a bit of a funny and confused look as he jumped down from his shoulder, spreading his avali wings to soften his landing with a short glide. He followed alongside Nero, tapping his little claws together anxiously as they approached Kabe himself but at first Pankaa hardly noticed his friend was right there in front of them as he kept glancing around at all the taller people then him- Which was everyone here- that he hadn't met yet, his little chest rising and falling rapidly enough that it was rather noticeable how terrified he seemed to be.
Eventually though his ears picked up Kabe's name come out of Nero's mouth and he snapped his attention away from everyone else to focus instead on his friend, which did seem to lift his spirits a fair amount! Or at least it was enough to help him finally speak. "Kabe! Happy birth!" Nero then reminded him that he had a gift to give and encouraged him to go ahead with giving it, prompting a shy look to come from Pankaa. Eventually though he would slip out the blue capsule he'd held onto on their way here. "Pankaa made these, just for Kabe Twisting and clicking down on the top of it, he was still getting used to the Earth's technology but he seemed to be getting the hang of all of it shockingly fast especially for someone his age. The capsule would burst open in Pankaa's small hands, revealing an overly sized scarf with one of Pankaa's feathers resting on top of it. The avali would flatten his ears back a little shyly but would offer the gifts to Kabe. "Pankaa got excited... Made the scarf too big... But Papa says Kabe will grow into it!" The scarf was very soft and lovely and he'd spent a lot of time on it but the feather was the gift that was a bit more heartfelt in his eyes. Avali tended to only gift feathers to close friends and they often hurt to be pulled out, but Pankaa had gone ahead and pulled out one of his many wing feathers anyway just so he could gift it to Kabe. The avali just hoped the meaning behind it didn't go totally lost due to the species and cultural differences.

As Kabe tugged at his mama's side to get her attention and an answer to his question, the approach of a saiyan woman with something large slung over behind her. Quickly she said sorry to the queen, and said something about becoming queen and work 'killing' her, which made no sense to Kabe because she was still standing there. Unless... she was a ghost? Oh! A ghost! That was cool! But... maybe it was rude to point it out and make a show of it. As she addressed Kabe, he smiled. "Yeah, yeah! Kabe!"
As he was presented with the burly behemoth, Kabe rushed closer and prodded it with his palm, before smelling it. "This good meat. Kabe like! Thank-you ghostlady queen!" As concentrate some energy toward his stomach so that he could eat the beast, his attention was drawn away from the queens and his food, to a stranger that looked a bit like the person- it was Nero! Kabe had seen him when he dropped Pankaa off on the day they met! "Hi Nero! Kabe birthday happy!" Kabe's wide smile brimmed even further when he noticed something way more exciting... it was Pankaa!
Tucked away behind Nero, looking a little nervous or scared, like a cornered beast on the hunt. Kabe... didn't like that his friend looked that way, it made him worried. But Pankaa stepped out from behind Nero and greeted him, before anxiously withdrawing a little blue one of those capsule-thingies lots of earth people had. Kabe took the advice of Barb and Gatza and Curb, and was patient to be polite to his friend, as the little bird boy clicked the capsule open.
Reaching out the birdling handed him a large woolen scarf that reminded him of his time on Duria in the jungle, and a familiar orange feather. Kabe blinked for a moment, and took both presents into his hands, examining them very closely. Squinting his little eyes he scanned every inch of the feather.
"Kabe love them!" He cooed, grabbed Pankaa and wrapping him into a hug. "Scarf remind Kabe of Duria! That jungle where Kabe used live. BUT Kabe love feather most! Now Kabe keep piece of friend Pankaa with Kabe at all times!!" Squeezing him tighter, Kabe stepped away from the hug for a second and ran back over to his mother. "Mama! Mama look what Pankaa give!!" He yipped, holding the feather up.
Kayen was fairly firm in her belief that the universe was TRYING to mess with her, somehow, some way, Kabe had become friends with all the children on Earth, Pankaa, Nero’s adopted kid. The utter insanity of Kabe and Pankaa finding each other without any effort on her or Nero’s part to put them together was frankly beyond her scope of understanding and it all but confirmed that someone up there HAD to be screwing with her.
At least though they were friends, and Pankaa was a good kid, with any luck some of the manners Nero had clearly put great effort into teaching the little bird would rub off on Kabe, she… SORT OF tried to get the boy to act right but the difficulty came in to the fact that Kayen was herself a very brash and ‘give no fucks’ person, as were most of her crew. The only person on the crew that vaguely ‘acted right’ was Barb and there was only so much she could do.
When the invite had to be sent out Kayen wasn’t exactly sure what to expect out of Nero, their first meeting had gone… ok? It certainly could have gone FAR worse, but it left Kayen unsure on if Nero would be willing to involve himself in the party, but of course he WAS the sensible one between them and eventually she had received the heads up that they would be coming.
Now it was just a matter of waiting.
At least though the wait was broken up as Nashua arrived “Hey Nashua, no problem, I don’t think you’re late and it’s not exactly like I’m laser focused on punctuality… and I’m not entirely sure Kabe can even read a clock yet” Kayen said the last part a bit quieter to hopefully avoid her kid hearing her, it was VERY likely accurate but Kabe would probably deny it either way.
Kayen raised an eyebrow as she saw Nashua’s gift, perhaps someone else might have considered it strange or even insulting to get a child a giant bear corpse as a gift, but it was hilariously perfect for the boy, the sheer volume of meat on the thing would last him… maybe a day? Which was saying a lot considering Kabe’s seemingly endless appetite.
“You’re not wrong” Kayen muttered as ALREADY Kabe appeared to be trying to figure out the best way to attack the caracas, his energy spiking as he stared hungrily at it but the moment of concentration from the boy was broken by the arrival of Nero and Pankaa, it was still a it surreal to Kayen to see Nero as anything other than a child, even more so to be able to interact with him.
“Hey” Kayen said giving him a nod before realizing that very soon a portion of her perpetually obscured background would become clearer to at least Nashua as she would be meeting Nero. She REALLY hoped to avoid having to explain too much at least for now.
Pankaa gave their gift to Kabe, a far less edible one compared to Nashua’s, a scarf with one of Pankaa’s own feathers something Kabe was VERY eager to show her “Very nice, be careful with it, we’ll find a way to make sure it stays safe later” Kayen was still VERY new to the whole parenting thing but with how rough Kabe could be she would definitely need to find a way to keep that feather safe but still reasonably available to Kabe.
“In a bit you and Pankaa should have some fun and play, you can enjoy the gift you got from Nashua later on, and if you don’t eat the whole thing immediately maybe we can turn the fur into a coat for you or something” Kayen said hoping to at least briefly delay the boy from devouring the bear on the spot. There was probably enough fur to make several coats for the boy in progressively larger sizes for when he inevitably started growing.

'Ghost lady Queen'? Nashua wasn't really sure what that was supposed to mean, but Kabe did sure seem to enjoy the present she'd brought him, as he seemed to prepare to devour the thing- though he was distracted by new arrivals, one of which was a rather small and fluffy bird creature, and the other was a man who looked familiar to Nashua, though she couldn't quite yet put her finger on where she'd met him. Something to do with criminals...? Was he a criminal? ...No, he'd been a bystander, right? She could only recall vague details, for the moment. "Either way, I'm glad I don't seem to be the last one arriving," she commented as the other guests arrived. "As an aside, there was a, uh, situation I'll have to fill you in on a bit later," Nashua added to the Queen, "But for now we can just enjoy your son's party."
The bird seemed to also be around Kabe's age, as he excitedly offered the small Saiyan a scarf as a gift. Nashua was momentarily concerned that Kabe might try and devour the scarf as he nearly had the dead bear, but he seemed to understand that it was for wearing and not eating as he proudly presented it to his mother. "He sure is cute," Nashua mused as she watched him excitedly prance around with his bird pal. "I was never that energetic when I was his age - I'm pretty sure I had about half of his gusto at most." She idly checked his power level out of curiosity, and raised her eyebrows when she saw what it was clocking in at. "And, uh, around one percent of his power level." Were all Saiyan kids getting this strong these days?
Regardless, she figured she should probably introduce herself more properly to the other adult in the room. Nashua approached Nero with a smile, and extended her hand for a shake. "Hi, I think we've met before somewhat informally, but I'm Nashua. How are you and Kayen related? One of her old pirate buddies?" she asked out of curiosity. He did bear something of a resemblance to Kayen, and that was when Nashua had the thought. "Oh! Oh, are you..." she glanced over at Kabe and the orange bird, then leaned in a bit closer and hushed her voice as she asked, "The dad?"
|| Nero’s PL: 104,000 || PL Suppressed to 17 [UT1] Power Gate is in effect ||
Nero easily recognized Pankaa’s bout of fear, and he had a few ideas as to why he may react in such a way— but Nero’s primary objective here was to comfort Pankaa and make sure he felt safe; they were going to a birthday party after all, and those were meant to be fun! “It’s okay, Pankaa, I’m big too, and I’m stronger than any stinky spaceship. Focus on having fun with Kabe, yeah? I’ll talk to the grown ups and all that, but if either of you boys want to ask me something, feel free!” Nero smiled encouragingly and booped Pankaa on the nose as they properly arrived. Nero did his absolute best to keep Pankaa as calm as possible while he was showing signs of distress— thankfully that seemed to melt away once he was interacting with Kabe, to whom Nero gave a happy wave.
Now that everyone was present, the festivities could more or less begin, with Nero doing his best to be cordial around Kayen, if only for Pankaa and Kabe’s sake more than anything else right now. Speaking of the boys, Nero watched on proudly as the two interacted, Nero gave Pankaa a thumbs up. “Attaboy, Pankaa~!” He smiled wide, he was fully confident that Kabe would like the gifts of course, but seeing that assertion be true was a huge weight off of Nero’s shoulders if he was being totally honest. “Hahaha, easy there Kabe, Pankaa is a champion hugger too, so watch out!”
When the Saiyan boy mentioned Duria, that got Nero thinking. Was that where Kabe lived before Kayen found him? If that was the case, there was a pretty significant chance that the reason for Kabe’s broken speech in standard common was due to it not being his first language, maybe he too was still learning? Nero would make a note to ask about that later on. For now he would check with Pankaa to see if he was all good and not too startled by Kabe’s friendly show of affection. “You alright son?” Once he made sure Pankaa was fine, Nero was approached by Nashua, whom he also greeted with a small wave and a smile.
“Hey there, hows things? I’m Nero in case you didn’t remember. Stop any robberies lately?” Nero chuckled, recounting their past meetings— both of which were related to some troublemakers causing a stir up. First there was a group of gangsters at a bank, then there was that bunch of edgy teens at a mall... Where Nashua had a bit too much to drink if Nero recalled correctly. She seemed sober now though, but she up and asked the trillion zeni question with a bonus hint of comedic misinterpretation. Nero could hardly keep a straight face as he snorted. “Good god, no.” Now he couldn't help but snicker, his eyes watered at the absurdity, but there was also the chance this greatly embarrassed Kayen so ultimately it was a silent win for him. “That’s gross, holy crap.” He began, wiping a stray tear of laughter away. “Not something I thought I’d ever hear. Anyways, nah, I’m fortunately neither of those things, I’m her brother. That’s its own.. Entire thing, so I’d rather not go into detail about it, this isn’t the time or place.” Nero concluded casually with a light shrug. “I’m not going to ruin a kid’s birthday party with personal baggage.”
Pankaa would press his two 'index' claws together and flattened his big ears back as he waited and watched for Kabe's response to his presents, feeling very anxious but excited to see what his friend thought of them! The little saiyan gave them a very close examination, especially the feather! Pankaa's own feathers atop his head and at the end of his tail would puff up lightly in anticipation! Hopefully he had picked out the perfect feather for Kabe!
Eventually the birthday boy concluded that he loved the gifts and pulled the little avali into a hug which made the raptor squeak with both surprise and joy, mission successful! He loved the gifts! "Yay! Pankaa spent lots of time picking out the right feather for Kabe!" Speaking of, the saiyan said the feather was the part he loved most about the gift not just that but the scarf reminded him of where he used to live-- A big toothy grin would spread across Pankaa's little face at hearing this and he would give his friend a big hug back, though Kabe was fairly taller then him it still had some force behind it at least.
When the two broke from the hug Pankaa would let off a couple bird-like cheeps as he fluttered out his wings since- Kabe had just squeezed him a little but Pankaa didn't mind! As the birthday boy ran off to show Kayen his gifts the avali would waddle on back over to Nero, tugging on the leg sleeve of his trousers for a few moments for attention while pointing to Kabe and Kayen, "Papa he liked it! Look!" Of course, Nero already knew that part and had watched the gift giving as it happened but Pankaa was too little and too excited to remember that part right now and so he showed him anyway!
Scurrying back over to Kabe who was still by Kayen the avali would bump into the little saiyan from moving just a bit too fast and stopping just a bit too slow, but shook it off and gently grabbed ahold of one of Kabe's arms as he looked first up at Kayen and smiled, "Hey Aunty Kayen! Thank you for invite!" He was so quick and abrupt with his hello to the Queen that he hardly even noticed the fact that he'd called her Aunty at all. Soon after his little hello though he would look over to Nashua who was the only person he hadn't met prior to now. She seemed to also be a saiyan like the others and had also gotten Kabe a gift! Her gift was much bigger then Pankaa's... And much bigger then Pankaa in general. Tugging on Kabe's arm the avali would pipe up and ask, "Kabe, Kabe! Who is that pretty lady over there? Is she Kabe's friend too? Would she wanna play as well?"
