Have you ever wanted to explore your character's past in better detail without the use of Solo threads? Do you ever think about what might have happened if some site events went differently? Well, if that's the case, you already might know what I'm getting at!
So, without further ado; lets discuss how to potentially bring those into reality with the idea of some special new boards...

Memory Lane & What If!
MEMORY LANE |
Everyone knows the importance of fleshing out a character’s backstory— some employ the use of minor personal flashbacks during their threads with other players. Others use Solo threads for more in depth looks into their character’s past.
However oftentimes one character’s past can be, or often absolutely is partially or directly connected to that of another. Some players specifically create another character’s parent, sibling, child, childhood friend, frequent acquaintance, and even mystical, genetic or mechanical creation to flesh out the pasts of all involved. In other cases, members can and do end up connecting two already existing characters by some manner of thread like the ones mentioned above when able to do so.
This is all well and good, in fact I view it as fantastic since it is a great way to build the world and connections. The problem however, is, these connections are often just that; simply discussed and pre-built between players OOC rather than IC, and the connection between characters is simply seen as a given and taken into account in present IC actions.
At the moment, flashbacks or journey’s into a character’s past that could concern other characters, aren’t exactly doable in a more accessible way. Attempting to do these sorts of things in the current IC boards would cause a disorganised timeline meltdown, and using the Training Board that is set at roughly the same IC timeframe imposes a set word limit that some past events could not be compressed into.
What I am suggesting, is the creation of a special board; by the name of Memory Lane that operates like IC threads (in that it would be auto-graded). However, to keep things clean, I would also suggest that it is kept separate from both the current-time IC boards and the Training Area.
Now, how exactly does it work? Glad you asked!
The Setup
Everything within this new board would have to take place within the bounds of the involved characters backstories. The connection intended for these characters to have would need to be stated in simple terms. These are by no means exhaustive, but here are some examples with theoretical character names used:

The Setup
Everything within this new board would have to take place within the bounds of the involved characters backstories. The connection intended for these characters to have would need to be stated in simple terms. These are by no means exhaustive, but here are some examples with theoretical character names used:
EXAMPLE 1Other Rules & ClarificationsEXAMPLE 2Player A creates an Arcosian called Cohle that is 124 years old, who canonically is listed as only having an overprotective mother, and four other siblings. Cohle is the second oldest of the bunch, and looks up to their older sibling and due to how their mother raised the bunch of them, Cohle also adopted similarly protective traits of those they are responsible for— this also extends to a general will to protect 'that which is weaker than me'.
Player B joins the site, and unsure of their own concepts, seeks guidance of other members. Player A approaches them with an offer to create any of Cohle's listed family, and gives some guidelines. Player B chooses to create Cohle's youngest sibling, and names them Frizzel, giving them the age of 25. Frizzel is a bit of a runt, and while they understand their mother and older sibling's protectiveness, has almost always had an insatiable drive to prove that they can take care of themselves. In doing so, in one moment of anger, Frizzel lashes out at his family at the age of 17, and runs away into the wilderness that is the universe that same night.
Player C sees this development, and is inspired to get in on this action, creating another sibling, the oldest of them and names them Kryel, who is 154 years old. They are a more pragmatic and logical sort, not so much often leaning towards emotion, and in the wake of Frizzel's outburst, Kryel offers to take charge in tracking down their youngest sibling with their mother's blessing.
Players D and E also approach the group later on with their own Arcosians called Sanow and Sleitt, who's family history was purposefully left vague beyond 'they had a large family', which easily slots them in as the remaining siblings at the ages of 69 and 74 respectively. The two are businessmen, and work in the technology industry across multiple planets, they have shown initiative and positive attitude which has allowed them to succeed in this field.
Finally, Player F, an OOC friend of Player A who already has the maximum amount of characters ends up NG+'ing a character that dies and creates the mother of the family; Aisen, an feminine Arcosian who at this point is a old lady at 544 years of age. As stated prior, she ends up as overprotective of her children; but player F has full reign as to why since Player A never specified the details since Cohle's backstory is not about her. As it turns out, Aisen was one hell of a fighter, and has some crazy moves. Due to the NG+ transfer, she ends up with a hefty advantage over her children in PL.EXAMPLE 3Player A creates an Earthling Human-Zoan type hybrid by the name of Cibatto, he is a 25 year old space faring troublemaker vigilante/pirate/rogue type with a Super Cool Gun and has caused trouble all over space. He goes by his own moral code and has a thing for ‘positive anarchy’. He has been a thorn in the side of many people and has clashed with hundreds of others.
Players B and C both create Namekians; brothers by the name of Rumpati and Aracam that are both 30 years old and they are a peace-keeping duo that fight very closely together and believe in strict lawful order and discipline through unity. They have clashed with the worst of the worst as well as some vigilantes before on their adventures on occasion.
Player A creates Cibatto independent of Players B and C creating the Namekian duo, and all three players do a few threads with different people, before OOC coming to an epiphany that there is a chance that Ciabatto had encountered Rumpati and Aracam briefly in the past in various situations but they are not fully acquainted as a result. All three players would potentially want to make a few threads where their various meetings are catalogued in the past.
Additionally, Players B and C could choose to have threads set in Rumpati and Aracam’s childhood together from day one.Players A, B and C are all good friends and join at the same time; and after looking through everything they decide to create a close trio of characters. They all decide that these characters would be youths of about 17 or 18 years old that have known each other since early childhood. They decide to create a Mammaijin, Heran and Aerojin called Coifé, Ráncari and Argús respectively, and they all start play on the same planet.
Coifé is rambunctious and always energised, ready for anything and always the one getting into trouble that the other two have to bail them out of. Never one to shy away from an adventure, Coifé always speaks their mind without restraint (which again, is a factor that gets them into trouble) much to the chagrin of their best buddies. While usually happy and peppy, once a line is crossed (particularly if harm comes to their comrades) and Coifé becomes angry... Hoo boy. It is not a pretty sight. Player A builds Coifé as a purely PL based character.
Ráncari, despite all odds is calm and calculating, raised to believe there is more power in brain than brawn, he has become a seeker of knowledge and intends to study spirituality and the art of Ki as opposed to going down the path of physical training as most Herans are known for. Because of this, he is often underestimated as a wimp, which suits him just fine, it simply means he is smarter than his potential opponent which is exactly what he would want. Player B builds Ráncari as a mixed build PL and items character.
Argús on the other hand, is colossally lazy, prefers to chill out and watch TV, play videogames and read comics as often as humanly possible. Coifé is usually responsible for dragging this lovable gaseous lug around despite his protests and continued attempts at absconding by turning a lot less solid than usual. Now, his desire for a normal life does not mean he is not without his own strengths, he just expresses them differently with his understanding of technology and how to manage things from a secondary perspective. Player C builds Argús as a minion main/LTO collector character.
All three players can progress with their characters interacting normally and periodically reference past events that they have experienced in the past throughout their threads. With this suggestion; they can fully explore those events with proper threads.
- By design, Death Enabled threads as we know them cannot be made within this theoretical board, if a character is to perish in the past at the hands of another, that is simply their narrative destiny, as it is effectively preordained.
- Power Level's place in these scenarios would still be relevant, even if the results of some fights would be preordained, simply for the sake of good practice.
Additionally; since there are some characters that are Transfers, NG+'es or were once relatively strong in the past and at some point lost their strength by some means (either by being drained and cursed to lose it, stopped maintaining it, a bout of sickness, or simply by deteriorating due to shoddy life conditions), I would like to propose some 'allowance' for this while keeping within guidelines of how the lore of the site worked prior to the upward rise in powers of the galaxy— I propose that this 'allowance' be up to 25,000 in base PL for these kinds of characters, or in general for all characters.
Otherwise, PLs in the past would theoretically just be anywhere from 1 to whatever PL a character was given on their first XP ⇨ PL conversion.
- How do currently archived characters factor into this? Well, sadly, given how the rules of the site are made, they simply cannot. Doing so would effectively bypass any character slot rules, and in some ways break the finality of archiving.
Though, If an archived character is super important to a currently active character, I would like to suggest that perhaps the player of the current active character gets permission from the player of the archived one to be played as a 'pseudo-NPC'.
- How would it work if a character is currently dead in the AL, or similarly in a different plane of existence? I feel as though this is somewhat similar to the above clarification— it would mess with or bypass too many other rules.
To that end, I would also suggest that any characters that are intended to engage in use of the Memory Lane board be on the same plane of existence (or even planet, but that's less of an issue in this context) at the time of the thread's creation. Additionally, using the Heckway or Heavenly Staircase to enter Otherworld from the Mortal Realm would not be able to bypass this rule.
WHAT IF? |
This is more or less as it says on the tin; this could also be its own board and house all manner of things in a sense— this would purely be for funsies shits and giggles. Typically threads here would consist of ‘what if x event went differently’, ‘what if it was x years from now’, ‘what if x group was y morality’ or even Xenoverse style PQ events, that sort of dealio. The various renditions of ‘Randoverse’ as periodically memed about in the site Discord could also take place here in a sub-board labelled as such.
Since this board would directly contradict or in a way tamper what is proper canon to the forum, or rely on certain uncertain variables and conditions, I would suggest that it is a board where no XP is gained whatsoever.
To facilitate this non-canon for funsies board not messily mixing with proper IC posts on the forum, I would also like to suggest that if implemented; those that intend to use it should create an extra forum account that is given their OOC handle/name to just mess around on it with.
