Vangreth’s quick rest before what could possibly be the most important time of his life was troubled to say the least; in his dreams, he could sense the influence of the monster who enslaved his people slowly creeping its way into his mind. Not that it was nearly enough to take him back into the abyss, but it was present enough that, even still so far away, he could feel the heavy presence getting stronger and stronger every moment he spent in that spaceship, toward Muko. It could not leave his mind, the feeling that his eyes were already on the Muko-Jin, perhaps it knew and was prepared to face him as well? Or perhaps it was even trying to scare him away, aware of Vangreth’s new abilities and powers? All those ideas, possible scenarios and uncertainty flooded the poor alien’s mind as he was desperately trying to get some peace of mind before landing.
His mind was awoken by a familiar shake; there was no doubt in Vangreth’s mind, this feeling, like the spaceship had just gone through a thing layer of ice… he had passed the planet’s prison and was now back where he came from… how unpleasant.
He quickly sprang into action, grabbing his gravity device and an idea sparked in his mind as he felt the Shinjin’s presence lurking around his mind. Perhaps if he was forced to focus the whole time, then he would not have to fear the lasting effects of his mind-control? Without wasting another second, he activated the device up to ninety-time Earth’s gravity, instantly feeling like his mass had increased tremendously, and it did seem to force his whole body and mind into a defensive stance; but how long would he be able to do what he had to with that thing on?
There was not much more he could do other than grab a snack while the spaceship was slowly making its way to the planet’s surface; now that it was in the atmosphere, it was going much slower as to prevent collisions and catastrophic consequences on the landing site. Stress was all over Vangreth; there was no going back now, he was on the planet and in a few minutes, he would get out of the spaceship and confront everything from his past without a pause. This oppressive ambiance from his last minutes of blissful calm did motivate him to finally go out and confront it once and for all.
The landing happened, the spaceship finding a safe, leveled ground to deploys its stationary form, and the door soon opened to reveal the scorched lands of planet Muko, once the home of Vangreth, everything he knew… now with all the images of Earth in his mind, this was just a sad wasteland with the occasional grey bush… and in the distance, his own little birthplace. This was the biggest settlement out of the few on Muko, where the great temple of the rulers was… just how pitiful could things get?
It didn’t take long for this world to react to Vangreth’s presence now that he was not fully part of it anymore; a group he was once part of sparked in the sky and landed in front of him. 10 of them, including his old mentor… alright, the hard part first.
‘’ Oh, Vangreth. Sorry for the welcoming party, but you are the first to come back here… We had to make sure it was one of our own and not an intruder. ‘’
This weirdly felt normal to Vangreth, even if he knew everything was off, he knew this warm attitude his mentor had towards him was fabricated, but for even the slightest moment, the alien felt like he was really back home.
But then, of course, everything swiftly went south as one by one, the Muko-Jins noticed that Vangreth was missing his collar-thing, and they suddenly went wide-eyed and silent, until all of them, including the mentor, noticed it, and the silence became just what Vangreth had been expecting from the start… this was the moment things would go south, wasn’t it.
‘’ Vangreth. The Rulers want to see you for debrief. Report immediately to the Great Temple.’’
And there it was, the warm and friendly tone of his welcoming was gone, and they visibly knew he was not going to just follow them on their terms, since they were approaching him slowly and some of them were letting their energy flow enough that he could see their aura a little.
But there was something he had, he always did have something more than them… but now he was trained, powerful and free of any control. He knew that his old comrades wouldn’t stand a chance, even with him under the effect of increased gravity, all he needed, was to transform.
‘’ Oh I will, but I’m afraid I have a few things to deal with before I go see the ‘Rulers’. But I’ll make sure they know where to find me.’’
As soon as his sentence was over, they rushed over to Vangreth without holding back, two of them even blasting him from afar as to open his guard for the rest going close-quarter.
A spark of red energy overshadowed Vangreth’s usual purple aura, and a second later, he tanked all the energy black without flinching! His hair was tainted with a faint scarlet glow and the red lines all over his body were shining! This form, he knew none of them even had it in its primal form; there was no way he was losing this far away from his main objective!
His old teammates arrived on him at full speed, although all too slow for Vangreth. He rushed their formation, a few times faster than them, and broke it by pushing his palm on one of their members, sending him to the ground. The thing about increased gravity is, you might be moving a lot slower, but you’re also moving with a whole lot more mass, so he didn’t really have to try much to known them down!
A swift battle ensued, Vangreth’s opponent clearly outmatched, but programmed to fight to the death, battled at their best, even using new techniques probably developed in the last few months in order to counter their own. Barely a minute in and all ten of them were on the ground, Vangreth standing victorious over them.
‘’ I know you’re going to hate this, but it will make everything a lot easier… as one said, I don’t envy you for having to go through this… But I must.’’
After apologizing to no audience, Vangreth began to difficult task to break the collars, still firmly controlling them. With his new power, and the proper way of doing it learned from his… Shinjin friend… the alien managed to get it done fairly quickly, each and every single one of them waking up, screaming in pain, as he destroyed their shackles.
With all of that done, Vangreth sat course for the settlement with only one goal in mind; free as much people as he could before the Rulers decide to interfere, and then it was just a final fight through the temple.
Even the settlement looked worst now that he could properly see it; the relatively healthy bunch of land cultivated by the people were much grayer, the fruits looked sickly and dry… it made it clear that, while breaking the curse of his kin was a huge step, it was not even close to be the one and only thing he’d need to do.
The villagers were not much of a fight. He did not even really have to do more than just restrain them lightly and rip the collar right off; these seemed much weaker than the one used on fighters, which of course, meant those on the rulers would be the hardest to break.
He went around and did most of the village, painfully aware of the experience they were going to forcibly go through, but that paled in comparison to the dread he could feel coming from the temple…
Thing is, Vangreth could read ki-signatures now… so he knew exactly where the Shinjin was, within the temple… and just how strong he was. Much stronger than Vangreth in his current state, that is for sure… would he have to wait and try to convince the fighters to rebel?
The moment he wondered about what he was going to do, steps behind him were heard and he quickly turned, ending up face to face with his old mentor, collarless.
‘’ What. Have you done? To all of us?! ‘’ He screamed, his voice breaking, as any voice would experiencing intense anger for the first time. And with anger came the same exact power Vangreth had used to defeat them; most inconvenient.
‘’ What trickery is this?! You have learned magic?! Those who trapped us sent you to torment your kin, IS THAT IT ?!’’
A spark of hope appeared in Vangreth’s eyes, the conflict within his old mentor had already began, at least he had been faster than himself to confront the truth.
The two Muko-Jins faced each other, one of total anger and one with resolution. Vangreth knew that it would only take some time before his kin realise the trickery, but he really hoped he could get some help of it.
This help was not the firs thing to come out of his old mentor though, but what was coming would waste Vangreth’s precious time.
A beam of energy crackled from the wise Muko-Jin and flared towards Vangreth, who barely had the time to power-up his own energy in his fist to counter it. His now opponent had gotten quick fast and strong, enough to take Vangreth by surprise! The two engaged in hand to hand combat, enhanced by the techniques one had teach the other so many years ago. Each blow becoming more violent, more precise, and powered by anger; if only he could have fainted for a day like Vangreth did, but of course he was too stubborn to just do that and just had to add another fight to Vangreth’s shoulder.
Eventually though, as a final punch from the mentor reached’s Vangreth’s chin, connecting and sending him flying, the mentor’s eyes widened as he realized something with his new-found senses.
‘’ Wait… someone… someone on this planet is… not one of us… I can feel someone…’’
Quickly getting back up, Vangreth nodded as he rubbed his chin.
‘’ There is. Someone who has been pulling the strings of the Rulers the whole time. I came back to free you all, not to torment anyone… ‘’
The realisation slowly dawned on the mentor as the weight of his actions began to sink in like it did with Vangreth months back. Tears rolled down his eyes, the man could only imagine what someone at least twice his age could have lived.
A moment where the silence was broken only by the faint sound of sobs coming from the mentor passed, the villagers were waking up from their shock and most of them seemed lost and confused, but mechanically went back to work… they’d figure It out eventually.
‘’ So… what’s your plan youngling? Do you even have one, or were you going to keep fighting everyone until they wake up?’’
The mentor finally asked, seemingly having regained control of himself, albeit temporarely.
‘’ Well I’m glad you ask. Because I have no idea where to go from here.’’
Vangreth answered sheepishly, but visibly motivated by the fact that he was no longer the one with everything on his shoulder.
His mind was awoken by a familiar shake; there was no doubt in Vangreth’s mind, this feeling, like the spaceship had just gone through a thing layer of ice… he had passed the planet’s prison and was now back where he came from… how unpleasant.
