When Vangreth woke up this morning, he was in grave need for some relief. With everything that took place around him in the recent weeks was slowly but surely driving him mad. The guilt of having lost control, the relief of having saved someone while doing so, but also the sheer terror he was feeling if he lost control again! He had managed to stop the arm of the monster within him once, but there was nothing sure about his capacity to stop it forever! What was the worst, this monstrous side of him was stronger than he ever was! There was no way around it, his next step in power was out of his hands and into something else, he could not trust it and would never use it outside of situations where it was either that or death, and even then… maybe he would cause more destruction.
All of this was spiraling out of control in his head day and night, with barely any sleep at all. There were patches of calm still, mostly when he was meeting people and learning about them, it seemed like he was still able to bond with people, or rather, this was the only thing between his fragile sanity and the total loss of control that was looming over him at all time.
Lazily getting out of bed, the alien slowly made his way towards the kitchen, where he prepared his breakfast without really paying attention to it all that much. The sun was slowly peeking through the horizon and right into this capsule house of his, throwing golden rays of warm light across the habitation and getting Vangreth his first smile of the day… the world was not ending, he was just going through rough time… and he had dealt with those before, and back then he did not have such a nice place to go back to every night, or as many friends he could count on… no, he was not about to let some blues ruin more of his life.
He needed motivation, so he was about to go get some. Devouring his breakfast and coffee, he would quickly grab his gravity device, slap it on and start it. It was a simple equation, he had pent up rage, doubts on himself and had not thrown a punch since the incident… he needed to remind himself that, even without that unstable power, he is still a force of nature! His power was not owned by this monstrous entity taking control of him! There was no way he’d let himself be defeated like this! Not without throwing his everything into the mix and causing as much trouble for this unknown force against him!
He entered the combat simulator with determination behind his every step, the room closed behind him and the lights shut off as usual. Then, after a few seconds of booting up, the machine began to light up and its interface would show up.
‘’ Good morning VANGRETH, how would you like to train this morning? May I recommend a warm-up session in our pre-generated scenarios?’’
Vangreth sofly nodded before remembering the machine only recognized vocal commands.
‘’ Yes I would like to. Initiate warm-up scenario.’’
Those words still felt weird to him, but he had learned how to use them properly in order to have the simulator run as smoothly as possible. With a low but constant noise of powering-up, the interface slowly cleared itself and turned into a hyper-stylized spaceship interior with colored neons, a whole esthetic Vangreth was not really aware of, but he did give a light nod to it all, it was pretty neat.
‘’ Horde mode engaged. Warm-up round will initiate in five seconds.’’
The alien readied himself, staying in base form for now since horde mode was all about endurance, and not raw power.
After exactly five second, the whole spaceship was shaken and emergency red neons lit the whole complex. An alarm began to ring.
‘’Security Breached. Lockdown initiated. Extra-terrestrial lifeforms confirmed on the ship.’’
Well that was awkward, but since the simulator itself was made by humans, he was not too surprised to find that sort of problem in their scenario.
Vangreth began to run in the spaceship, if there was one strategy in the horde mode, it was not staying in the same place for too long, as to not allow the creatures to stack up in an unstoppable bloc.
Quickly enough, monster-like aliens began to break through the vents, doors and other entrances and leap to attack Vangreth! He was used to those however, and in warm-up rounds, they were still pretty weak, so he simply punched his way towards the first objective, or rather, trying to find which of the many objectives in the game had triggered in the first round.
Vangreth’s warm-up game went nicely, the rounds came and went with little trouble, he had gotten pretty good at this, especially since it did not require team-effort, which was his big issue in video games in general.
The final round arrived, boss round! Vangreth had switched into his Eldritch Power form, and thankfully had found the bonus helmet that allowed for more time to beat the boss!
‘’ Warning! Massive lifeform detected! Enga…’’
The voice of the ship was cut off by a loud crushing noise, and suddenly, the cargo was half-gone, and a massive creature was outside of the ship, attempting to eat it whole!
This boss fight was really hard, especially since your time was based on how much of the ship you managed to save up to that point, but Vangreth had a winning game on his hands, as he managed to save most of it, and the space-breathing helmet gave him that ever-so-precious additional time.
The alien jumped outside of the ship and the timer began as the boss fight had begun.
The monster was massive, the size of the whole space-ship in fact, and was insectoid in appearance, with chitin and tendrils all over the place. The Muko-Jin went to work and began to attack the tendrils one by one, the best strategy he had found himself to defeat the giant monster.
Flying around and evading the multiple tendril attacks from the monster was incredibly tight, even with Vangreth’s speed, the game was adapted to his capacity, and in return, the monster was made more dangerous to compete. Countless claws, fangs and other sharp body-parts were flailing around in barely predictable patterns, and Vangreth could see the timer slowly go down as the ship was being eaten.
After a few minutes of intense dodging, attacking, ripping off tendrils and overall really thrilling action, the monster was defeated, and Vangreth was victorious!
‘’ Congratulations you have defeated the aberration horror that lurks in the dark corners of space! You win!’’
A screen with his time, score and other achievements done and missed appeared, and Vangreth was pleased to see he had established his new personal record, even unlocked a new level of difficulty ! That’s nice! After nodding to himself with pride rising up within him, he pressed the ‘exit game’ button and the interface slowly changed to the regular combat simulator hub.
‘’ Congratulations on your record in Horde Mode. Your capacity was at 105% your usual best. Shall we proceed to today’s training?’’
‘’ Yes please.’’
A screen then appeared in front of Vangreth with multiple options for training, many of those he knew, but there was a specific thing he wanted for today.
He began to switch on and off options here and there, preparing the best possible environment for this one duel he needed to have.
When the ‘opponent’ choice appeared, he sighed deeply, took a deep breath and then pressed the avatar created from his monstrous form… he needed to know exactly HOW stronger that thing was from him, and there was not many ways to do so.
