Thread PL: 18,552 Captain KobanMarching through the streets of Satan City, Banzo yawned blearily. He had been up all evening training, and now was in search of breakfast. As had become near habit at this point, he was also using Ki Sense to search for any power levels that stood out above average. He was mid-yawn when he nearly choked. A ways away was a power level, almost equal to his own. Quite powerful indeed. Eyes widening, Banzo zipped upwards, causing a few people to yell in shock. He sped through the air, honing in on it, when he was distracted by a sudden rumbling of his stomach. Swerving, he dove down through the drive-through area of a McBao's, stopping at the speaker. "Hi, yeah, could I get one of tha' Egg Muffins?" After the confirmatory crackle, he moved forward and waited. A minute later, the window slid open, and he handed the apathetic young man a few zeni. Getting a sandwich, he threw it whole into his mouth, chewed for a second, then drained a beer he pulled from his pocket and flew off, tossing the wrapper into the trash. Now heading for the power level once more, he skidded to the ground a block away, and sprinted, rounding the corner of a building and pointing dramatically in the direction of the power he felt. "HEY, YOU! WE NEED TO TALK!" Bellowed the Saiyan, one hand on his hip and face quite red indeed. That had been a bit faster than might have been a good idea...

Today had been a pleasantly quiet day so far, while Koban certainly enjoyed his work helping people it did his heart good to spend a fair amount of time on his patrol without needing to take any action, to be able to just see people going about there day under no duress. Of course, if Satan City was doing well enough that probably meant it was best for him to move on to one of the other cities, while he had not gotten any calls about anything major yet his abilities might perhaps have more use elsewhere before things got bad enough for someone to call him in. With things as calm as they were Koban decided to grab a snack while he debated where to head out to, he was halfway through a cup of instant noodles when his peaceful walk was interrupted by the sudden arrival of a rather large and red-faced man, his loud declaration that they needed to talk caught Koban off guard nearly causing him to spill his noodles. “What can I do for you? Is something wrong?” Koban asked raising an eyebrow at the man, as far as he could remember the man was a complete stranger even if the man seemed quite certain that Koban was the man he was looking for. Huh. Interestin', a Heran. Rather made sense, they were one of the more combative races, frequently kept up with or surpassed Saiyans. This one... appeared to be wearing a rather colorful outfit, though.
"Well, yes and no. Mostly it's just cause I felt yer power from across the city. Frankly, you're one of the strongest people I've seen so far." Waving his hand for a second, Banzo caught his breath and walked closer, putting his hands on his hips. "So, long story short, The Planet Vegeta was attacked by the Arcosians, bunch of Saiyans fled and ended up on Earth, now we're pretty sure the Arcosians are gonna rock up and try and take down Earth too. So, we need as many people as we can find to get stronger, so Earth isn't defenseless."
He said all this in one long, fairly casual breath, then inhaled deeply. "Also, you're strong and I'd rather like ta spar with ya, all things considered. Th' name's Banzo, and you are?" He grinned widely, sunny disposition rather at odds with the sudden and rather blunt message he had just conveyed. There was perhaps a bit of a sense that he had repeated said speech quite a few times already.

As Koban waited for the man’s response he took a moment to get a good look at him and as he did so realized just how strong the man was, it was rare to meet up with people who’s relaxed power was stronger than his own and so far it also usually meant for interesting times considering how well his encounter with Mal had gone. The man standing before him even beyond his actual power level had the look of a powerful person, tall broad-shouldered and with a physique that clearly showed the man worked out often he at first looked like a Human but the longer Koban looked the less certain he felt, something about the man felt a bit… ‘more’, perhaps he was a Saiyan? The answer to that question came sooner than Koban expected as the large man spoke, complimenting Koban on his power before going on to explain the attack on Vegeta, Koban wanted to interrupt but with the man making no actual stops as he spoke he had no time. “Yeah I had heard about the invasion, I like to keep an ear open for big shake ups in the galaxy, I’m sorry for what happened. You’re actually not the first Saiyan I’ve talked to about this though, I met up with Prince Vocado a bit ago when his ship landed. I’ll most certainly be lending a hand if the WTF decides to attack Earth or the Saiyans that are here.” Koban said with a nod, he wasn’t quite sure if the WTF would be bold enough to attack the Earth itself, with Vegeta at least they had a long history of issues, but even if they were just seeking the Saiyans Koban had no intention of standing back. “I’m Koban, Captain of the Pride Troopers and I’d be glad to spar with you” Koban said with a grin. Well, that was interestin'. Apparently, this was someone who had already met with Vocado. Then, he blinked. "Ah, yeah! The Pride Troopers, Vocado mentioned you a while ago." He chuckled, rubbing his forehead. "Ah well. Still glad to meet ya, even if you've already been contacted." So, this was the leader of the Pride Troopers that Vocado had mentioned. Nice. If he was any indication of his subordinate's power, they'd be well served as allies. Plus, honestly, he was pretty cute. Definitely a plus....
No, no. Wait to hit on the cute Heran until AFTER the invasion, Banzo. You have shit to do.
"Glad ta hear you're understandin' of the situation. Bit embarrassing to have to ask for help, but well, I don't want people to get hurt cause of us." He rubbed the back of his eyes, looking troubled for a moment. "Had some clown mocking me for being 'weak' and begging for help earlier... was kinda upsettin'. Then again, he clearly didn't care about collateral damage when he tried to start a fight in the city. Calls himself Demon Lord Pepper, big horns, looks kinda fuzzy. Maybe someone to watch out for." He wasn't too sure how dangerous Pepper really was.
"Although, he did apparently spend several hours in a dumpster after throwing a bottle at someone's head, thinking he killed them... so maybe he's just an idiot." Shrugging, Banzo walked a bit closer and sat down, waving a hand in dismissal. He didn't really want to harp on that too much. This was one of their allies in defending the Earth, after all. Sure, probably different reasons, but an ally nonetheless.
"Anyway, clearly we're not gonna fight here. That'd just be rude, and besides, yer still eating. So, tell me... what ARE the Pride Troopers? Heard the name a few times before, but not really familiar with 'em."

Koban grinned as Banzo mentioned that Vocado had apparently spread the word about them a bit, having more people know about the Troopers was an ever-present step on the road to having the team be a more readily recognized and perhaps to some extent ‘official’ force of good and justice in the universe. “You should never be embarrassed to look for help, working with others makes us stronger. It's part of why I made the Pride Troopers.” Koban said doing his best to reassure Banzo against his misgivings on seeking aid, Koban could sort of see why it was that he might take issue, Saiyans were as a species generally defined by pride, pride in themselves, pride in their species, and so on. “I’ll keep a look out for him, if he’s actually a proper Demon then Sam will probably know how best to deal with him,” Koban said with a nod, tapping the compartment in his right pauldron and grabbing a notepad and pen from within jotting down the name Banzo had provided and the basic and potentially relevant information. “Yeah fighting here would probably not be for the best, while the people might enjoy the show for a bit if we wanted to get any sort of serious I imagine we’d become a bit of a problem, I know a few good places in the area that we can use though,” Koban said, the few places actually IN the city were limited based on their strength so it was probably going to end up being somewhere on the outskirts of the city. “The Pride Troopers are pretty simple, we’re really just a group of people looking to make the world, and once we’ve got the means, universe, a better place. Most of the time we do a lot of work helping people and doing our best to pair out different skill sets to get the jobs done.” Koban explained his excitement and passion for the team shining through as his already jovial attitude intensified. Hmm. This guy was pretty wise, it seemed. "Yeah, ye got a point there. A group is always going to be more flexible than an individual. Still, it's more tha'... some people feel like this is us bringing our problems to Earth. Ah don't see it that way, but y'know, it's not an unreasonable position." He shrugged slightly, quirking his mustache slightly.
Koban noted some of the info about Pepper, although Banzo was privately intending to beat the hell out of the little shit if he showed up again outside a city. Speaking of fighting and cities, it seemed Koban understood his reasoning. "Good to hear. I make it a point to find some spacious, empty areas around places I go now. Spars, fights, and general fisticuffs seem to be pretty common around here. Usually good-hearted, although it can get a bit intense if we let it." Chuckling, he tapped a scar on his shoulder where he had gotten winged not long ago. "Still, not like it's a big issue. Scar's just a story, after all."
Huh. Interesting. These Pride Troopers sounded like a well intentioned Merc group. "Sounds like a somewhat more noble version of what I did. I was a privateer for a long time. Now, I know how that sounds, but there's a reason we were privateers, not mercs. Only work for legit governments, and only went after nasty sorts. No fighting rebellions, no dealing with anyone who uses slaves, and no assassinatin' political rivals. Just beatin' up pirates, protecting transports, attacking slavers and criminals, all that." He wiggled a hand. "Not exactly heroic, I admit, but we had standards. I wanted somethin' I could feel decent about, after all."

“Earth has quite a few places that are particularly good for training if you know where to look, honestly im really surprised that Earthlings dont have a higher average power all things considered, there planet has some pretty wild places” Koban said with a shrug, Earthlings as a whole didn’t tend towards being particularly strong but boy oh boy when an Earthling DID take training seriously they could easily put most others on notice. “Maybe another time we could give one of those a go” Koban offered, he already found himself fond enough of Banzo that he had no problem planning to meet up with him again down the road, perhaps they could even set up some sort of training brawl between the Troopers and some other members of the surviving Saiyans. Koban remained quiet and made effort to cut off Banzo to judge him as he mentioned being a privateer and his expression showed no distaste for what the man described only briefly faltering as Banzo mentioned pirates “While you might think of it as particularly heroic I, at least from what you described, certainly would. Protecting others, fighting slavers, and pirates are all heroic things to do, that you might have done it for money does not lessen the good you have tried to put into the universe” Koban said letting a wide grin dominate his features to mask some of his unease, pirates brought up a lot of bad memories for the blue hero. "Sure, ah'd like that. Could use some more brawling with someone at my level, ta be honest. Most of the fights I've had have been hilariously one-sided, unfortunately." He coughed slightly, remembering the incident with the Oozaru and the scout.
He wasn't really expecting the response he got from Koban, though. "... Ya think so, huh? I mean, I just kinda figured it meant we had standards. Nobody really likes those scum-sucking, self-serving jerks... but huh." He rubbed his chin, thinking for a moment, raising an eyebrow slightly as he did. The mention of pirates had seemed to bother Koban somewhat... Turning back to the Pride Trooper leader, he hummed for a moment. "Had some bad experiences with pirates, I take it? You seemed to flinch when I said something." His accent had dulled somewhat, and it seemed the normally jovial Saiyan was now more serious.
More than one person in the Tato Corps had some past issue with some group, faction, race or creed. He remembered having to pull Kazoo off of a Heran. The blue-skinned warrior had been laying on the ground, insensate, and nearly beaten to a paste. Kazoo, meanwhile, had been sobbing and holding himself. To be fair, that particular Heran had been a slaving bastard, but still. They had tried to keep Kazoo away from them from then on. PTSD was a bitch.
"I understand if you don't want to talk about it, mind. Just figured I'd ask, sometimes a friendly ear helps. Remember seein' the boss talkin' to someone at a bar once about a past mission. Asked him why he didn't talk to us later, and he explained he had be strong for us. If he broke down in front of the men, they couldn't depend on him, so he had to find someone outside the company." Banzo shrugged. "Dunno if he was right or not, but there ya go."

“It’s a bit more complicated than that, while yeah I have had a few run-ins with pirates those have never really been anything TOO bad, just villainy on a different sort of scale, pirates are almost always the definition of what I stand against...” Koban said with a shrug, Banzo seemed like a decent person, Koban rarely had much occasion to speak about his own problems with pirates, being a generally upbeat and positive sort of person he rarely ever took the time to bring them up meaning that even his Trooper’s knew relatively little about his parents.
“But if things had gone differently long ago, there's a good chance I would BE a pirate.” Koban said with a sigh, he liked to believe that even if his parents had not been taken down that he would never have become like them, but it was difficult to know how much of who he was today relied upon being raised by a good man. “My parents were pirates, from what I’ve read they were a really nasty team at that. I got lucky though, before I was old enough to start becoming like them they were taken down by the Galactic Patrol.” Koban said hoping that it would not color Banzo’s opinion of him much or at all.
“I like to hope my work does a bit to undo the damage they did while they were out in the universe. It’s part of why I don’t want my team to just focus on one planet, Pirates and those like them don’t focus on one world, they strike at anything and anyone they think they can take down, someone needs to be out there stopping them.”

He remained silent at Koban spoke, listening intently. 'It's a bit more complicated' was always a fairly heavy phrase, in his experience. The normally joking mien of the muscular Saiyan was gone, and he sat still as the Pride Trooper explained his reasoning.
When he finished, Banzo nodded. "Makes sense. I had a pretty typical relationship with my parents. Got training regularly, when I was about 13 they pronounced me ready and I went off on my own. Still visit from time to time, but mostly independent for a while now." He hummed for a moment, then blinked. "Oh. Typical for a Saiyan, I guess. Although my dad was a Demon. My mom was a merc, met him on a mission. He was guarding some base. She knocked him out, then came back later and asked him what he was doing that evening. Apparently she found him cute."
He snorted, crossing his arms. "Not really the point, though. From the sounds of it, you've worked pretty hard to be your own man, and from the sounds of it, you're doing a damn good job. I wouldn't worry too much about what your parents did. I mean...." He tilted his head. "Sure, you're still doing good, don't get me wrong. But don't feel responsible for their choices, or obligated to pay off some debt they incurred." Leveling a finger at Koban, Banzo stared intensely at the man. "The good you do isn't lessened by their greed, ya got it?" As he finished, a buzzing sound came from his pocket.
Frowning, Banzo lifted the phone from his pants and looked at it. "Oh, right. I'm supposed to go meet someone soon." Vocado was apparently planning something big. Probably making his claim for king, based on what he had said before. "Besides, seems like yer occupied. We should meet up later and spar a bit, yeah? Would like to meet the rest of the Pride Troopers I've heard so much about." Getting up, he dusted off his hands before offering one to Koban to shake. "Pleasure meetin' ya, Cap'n. Hope things go well for you, and hopefully I'm around to offer help if a dust-up is ever goin' south for your lot, yeah?" Koban was a good guy. Hell, he actually made Banzo a little self-conscious about his own morals, and that wasn't something that often occurred.

Koban was only vaguely surprised by Banzo’s admission that he was half demon, at this point he was starting to think that there was something about him that acted as a sort of Demon magnet, quite a few of his close friends were either part or full Demon along with quite a few of his enemies. He was also not exceptionally surprised by Banzo’s description of typical Saiyan familial relations, he had learned quite a bit about that from his own time on Vegeta with Ayoshi.
Koban was relieved of all the tension he hadn’t even realized he had built up in himself as he gave Banzo the rundown on his background, it was nice to have someone tell him the same sort of stuff he did his best to tell himself. Koban’s grin returned as Banzo spoke returning to its full strength as the large Saiyan gave his last statement before his phone buzzed.
“Thank you Banzo, I usually try to keep that sort of stuff in mind, it used to get to be a lot more when I was younger, but you’re right. I’m my own man, though even if I don’t need to feel responsible for fixing what they have done part of me does like the idea that I can undo some of the pain they brought into the universe.”
“I’d definitely be down to meet up again some time. Hopefully, once the Headquarters is a bit more situated you can meet some of the others.” Koban said with a grin taking Banzo’s hand and giving a firm but friendly shake “Likewise, if you or any of the other Saiyans on Earth need a hand you have the Pride Troopers to rely on.”

Nodding, Banzo raised a hand. "Seeya later, mate." With that, he flew off, picking up the phone as he did so.
